I wouldn’t expect you to be able to observe any ill effects without having an oil analysis done. The concern is that moisture being introduced would lessen the ability of the oil to do it’s job in the same way that oil with 30k miles on it won’t protect as well as oil with 5k on it. Any failure would likely present itself as a normal wear failure. It would be unlikely that anyone would ever equate it to moisture in the lubricant. With routine maintenance at a higher frequency, this isn’t a concern at all.

Axle seals will never be designed as the weak point in the sealing of the rear end. The vent would be made to let air in before a pressure difference high enough to collapse a seal occurs if everything is operating correctly. There are so many variables here that can effect this though. Especially on 20 year old vehicles, and determining a root cause for a failure in that case would be nearly impossible.

The point of all of this is really just that if you have an open vent, you might want to consider increasing your maintenance frequency.

    Yeah.
You are not the target market. I would post in the 3rd gen section.

Set of 2 Diff Breather Balloons - $19.97 + $14.32 Shipping and Handling

Quality differential air is an often overlooked item when maintaining top vehicle performance. Don't let your diff air escape or be contaminated, regardless of where you drive! These quality Diff Breather Balloons will keep your sealed system sealed and extend the service life of your differential fluid. Also effective in containing environment-harming fluids in the case of a rollover. No re-routing needed, just attach over existing breather and drive! Share with a friend!

No, but I've known a few. I sold shoes at a mall Thom McAnn when in HS, and I knew then I would not go into sales.

LOL, just read the rules and I would need to be a vendor or have a photo of the actual item. But I may do it after a beer or 2 later anyway.

BTW, these Nike posts are getting deleted as political . . .

    Yeah.
    Diff breather plot thickens . . .

So, I ran my own tests with the recommended Toyota part from all the mod threads as well as the original breather I removed:

Mod Breather (supposedly an OEM Toyota part): Just an open fitting with a crimped cap. Took the crimped cap off and it's just an open tube. No valve mechanism at all. Maybe I got a fake one? Suggest going to a dealer, not ordering the "genuine" part off of Amazon.

Original Breather: Requires a bit of pressure buildup to let air OUT. Blowing lightly it is closed, but then pops open with more pressure. Does not let air IN at all. At least not using my test method, and I am too new to this town to know where to find someone that can improve on my oral test method.

So....interesting. Using the recommended mod part would likely be worse than the filtered breather I put on there. I could clamp the original breather on there, but it doesn't seem to account for ANY vacuum, possibly allowing water to get pulled in through axle seals.

    What to do?

Hey, @G.T. hope you are feeling better (still lurking in both the STL thread and here, sorry I moved before joining you for a mod day). @PinnaclePete for sure, I'm a possibility if my folks decide to leave in time.
