Actually 5550 is the easiest nothing to technical just water crossings and a couple mud holes be sure to check the mud holes where there is multiple ways through them. I just came off of 5500 cause it looked like a trail on the map that was a little more technical

Cool, I'll check it out. I have some friends who've boated the Little Piney and Mike's creek in that area, I'll see if they're familiar with it as well.

Suddenly 10 Tacomas and one 4runner descend on the once quiet and secluded camp spot...

Sounds like we need to have our own Arkansas TW rendezvous this spring, run some trails and do some camping. We've only been once this year, and had a blast. Between the great weather, food and that bottle of Josh's bourbon we emptied...

My 2nd weekend gearing up at Ozark Outdoor Supply. This trip to get a Garmin InReach Mini 2.

Their prices are the same as Bass Pro Shop. Cabellas, and Moose Jaw with a lot less hassle and more personalized service. I would rather support a local area business any day.

Yup, they do have some cool stuff I’ve bought some Patagonia clothes there before. Usually there’s a 4Runner sitting outside I’m guessing someone that works there?

The 5GT4R is the owner. When I was there last weekend, I bet we talked about Toyota stuff for an hour. Ha!

Hey all-thanks! Just got home this afternoon from a 9 day trip down into Arkansas from Wisconsin. I am planning to drop short stories about the trip with pictures if that is okay.
I came into Arkansas via Missouri as expected. Missouri was a train wreck-I guess its good clean fun to steal every sign in the forest, but what a PIA for those who don't happen to have a working knowledge of the area... Despite being lost a lot I made it to Arkansas following as best I could the Trans Missouri Overland Trail (TMOT.) First night was at Onondaga Cave SP, second at Alley Springs and then into Arkansas. So I came into Erbie for a start. Someone here mentioned the road down from the West was a mess; well, they have put a tone of rock on that road, so it seems like it might be better now. Loved that descent! So I am not a water guy. A creek here and there but not many in the past 57 years, so I was a bit apprehensive about the ford. Got down there, crossed the first little stream and then got to the crossing. Took pictures and went right across and around the corner to the ACTUAL crossing of the Buffalo river. I about sh@t a brick! No kidding, a canoe and raft were passing by at that moment, and that was a river to be crossed... I was already in 4 lo so I just did it. It was deep and that standing wave on the backside of the ford was crazy, but truck did fine. So freaked out I didn't take a picture! Have the precursor but not the real crossing. checked out the farm and then headed up the hill. Got some pictures of the canoe and a discussion with them-they were as suprised to see me go across as I was to see them floating by! Learned how to do a water crossing the first day...

Got out for a nice night at Mcilroy WMA with my two favorite camping buds (sorry @TenBeers & @TerraNerva). Would have been a great night if I hadn't removed and forgot to replace my wife's and my sleeping bags, fortunately we had one for the kid and a couple of snugpac jungle blankets. Let's just say it wasn't my coziest night in a tent. The area looks like there must have been a recent clean up effort, our sight was pretty darn clean.

First night in Arkansas was spent at Knuckles Creek at a dispersed site across from the trailhead (on a recommendation from parties here-THANK YOU!) really nice camp site. Cannot say enough about how clean everything was in Ozark NF! Big and beautiful, not a bad campsite in the whole place-they were around every corner and bottom land.

Did a mountain biker ride: up to the fire tower and down and around. Great trail, as promised. I like the rock... sop different from home up north. Was excited about the rides to come as I worked my way through the NF!

If anybody needs a 265/70/16 spare tire & steel wheel from a TRD OR Tacoma, let me know. Never been on the ground, and don't have room in the garage to keep it.

    Will sell or trade......

    Dixon Ford…

    Dixon Ford Sign.jpg

More on my trip through Ozark NF. After my ride at Knuckle Creek I headed just around the corner and took the road towards Dixon Ford It was mentioned here that the road was a “bit scratchy with a few mud holes” and that is a great description. This was the most challenging trail on my trip and it did not let me down.. The mud holes were indeed large numerous and challenging.

    crossing.jpg

The trail starts as a nice dirt road and quickly closes in and becomes a mud hole mess. As the trail narrowed I should have been paying more attention to the safety of my bike… unfortunately it was a loud thump that clued me in to the damage. Tore the hydraulic brake line clean off the lever. Well, nuts. No more riding and what a bummer as I had several more epic days of riding planned. Oh well… off to the ford. The crossing itself was uneventful, just stay left. Once to the highway I took a left toward Glory Hole Falls and Nail where I dropped in on a very steep and narrow road to Limestone (Fun!). After a bit more route finding I found my way to Carwash Falls and out to highway 123.

    carwash falls.jpg

Next was a trip down FR 4840. A detour up into the Long Pool CG round for water and then up the Indian Springs/FR 1808 to Sand Gap. I had planned to head north on FR 750 to a dispersed camp on the south edge of the Hurricane Creek Wilderness. Unfortunately I could NOT find the road. The road is shown on the FS map, but it doesn’t exist where they show it. I ended up down a very long drive that ended at a home from whence a nut bag chased me all the way back to hwy 123 Freaked me the Fack out!

After that madness I beat feet to Sand gap and proceeded down to Victor and the North Fork Road. At the bottom I ducked into Hector for fuel and camped up near the top of White Oak Mountain in a beautiful dispersed site. Long day!
