Any MLB fans here???

Per the rules there is no such thing as a "neighborhood" play, you either touch the base on a force play or you don't. And as long as Utley is within reach of the base there is no rule governing where or when he slides. MLB has no rule regarding interference solely to break up a double play at 2nd on a thrown ball or force play. The umpires got this right per the MLB rule book.

However, all levels of amateur baseball have a specific rule related to DP's which would have made Utley and the batter (Kendrick) both out due to Utley sliding into Tejada. Not MLB. This will almost certainly change in the next year, just like Posey's injury led to a much-needed rule change for tag plays at home.

 

I haven't read the rule book, but I was under the impression that you had to at least reach toward the bag. He never made an attempt to touch the bag.

 

Reached for the bag but caught Tejada's knee in his face before he could touch it. The slide was too late to keep his hand on the base if he would have touched it, but there's no rule against bad sliding.

Utley admitted he was trying to "get a body" on Tejada to break up the DP. That's what they're taught to do, because at the professional level its within the rules. It's time to change the rules.

No worries. Utley's lucky he didn't get a concussion. While I don't believe this was a dirty play, this kind of play needs to end. If I want to watch a contact sport, I'll stick with hockey or football.

At least, in this play, he actually slid, and only used his legs to tangle up and try to break up the double play. The run at Tejada was a serious bush league move. A bit surprising considering Utely is a middle infielder, as well. Utley is an end of the bench utility guy now ending his career. Acting like the enforcer on a hockey team. Sad. Takes out a significant player for the Mets, and a kid whose just getting started in his career. Utley could just as easily destroyed the kids knee and ruined his career. Haven't seen such a cheap shot since Holiday rolled up Scutaro.

 

Just saw they banned Utley for 2 games. Good call in my book.

The Holiday 'slide' was bs as well.

 

Utley's always been a dirty player. 2 games isn't nearly long enough given his history.

Bullshit ruling by Torre. Rule cited is specifically only applicable when the runner leaves the baseline. From the MLB online rulebook "A batter is out when":

(13) A play on him is being made and a member of his team (other than a runner) hinders a fielder’s attempt to field a thrown ball. See Rule 5.09(b)(3) (Rule 7.11). For interference by a runner, see Rule 5.09. Rule 5.09(a)(13) Comment (Rule 6.05(m) Comment): The objective of this rule is to penalize the offensive team for deliberate, unwarranted, unsportsmanlike action by the runner in leaving the baseline for the obvious purpose of crashing the pivot man on a double play, rather than trying to reach the base. Obviously this is an umpire’s judgment play.

Utley did not leave the baseline. He also did not hinder an attempt to field a thrown ball - the thrown ball had already been fielded. And he was a " runner" until he was ruled out by the umpire, which didn't happen until after the collision.

 

I was there at that game. Everyone was so pissed. Good god that was a cheap shot. Holliday is a punk with terrible fielding skill.

 

The blue jays live for another game. Estrada looked good. Sounds like Dickey might start tomorrow with Price ready in the bullpen should the need arise for him.

 

Finally they woke up. Hopefully they make this series exciting.

Meanwhile I hope the Astros close out the Royals. Royals fans are so annoying. I'd compare them to the fake fans SF had and hopefully lost this year.

Suspended for two games. Utley appeals, and shows up in uniform tonight. Appeal. They should suspend him for more games but the Dodgers probably lose to the Mets in 4. Maybe Utley will get an at bat tonight. High heat! I can't believe some people are defending that alleged slide.

 

wow the hate is strong against the Dodgers. I feel like we could insert Red Wings or Patriots in place for the Dodgers and have the same argument.
