As a recent purchaser of 2016 White Sport, I did some homework regarding issues had with this particular year/model.

Anything you don't hear much about that I should know about?

    Thanks in advance.

Regarding the paint issues? There’s a couple threads here on that.

That whole paint thing seems to be really mysterious. My particular truck has zero flaws in the paint, so I'm considering myself lucky.
Actually, I have to say the factory paint is really nice. Also, Super White is the perfect color to have here in AZ when it's 115.

However, I have seen some examples that are ridiculously bad, although 9 out of 10 of them were double cab.

Not much different mechanically between 2016 to 2023. Most the above issues can and do affect all model years of the third gens.

I also bought a 2016 used about 7 months ago. Found it had the timing cover leak later . Patched it with some permatex and slowed it down.

Mines not white, so can’t comment there. I do like that the early third gen’s don’t have all the extra electronics.

Guys... What's up with Yota lately? What happened to tires, oil changes and brakes out to 300K miles?
Doing research before this recent purchase was somewhat depressing. It seems that crank girdles used in the Twin T 3.5s are having some issues and spinning bearings.
Machining debris my ass. It's called profit driven, not satisfaction driven. That's a 180 for Toyota. Their engineering has always been second to none.

Toyota P/Us used to be the Benchmark. Toyota was the company that every manufacturer wanted to be.
Remember: "Toyota Dependability"? It seems that term is beginning to be as valid as "Government Intelligence".

The market wanted bigger, faster, more fuel efficient, less emissions,,, that’s what happened.
If you want a 22E with 116 hp, and hp/weight ratio that increases with reduced body weight (via rusted panels blowing off) then go get you one.

I had a handful of TSBs to address within the first year but my 8.5 year old truck has been very dependable. Here is the 2016 Tacoma Specs PDF you may find interesting. Welcome to TW.

I tried. The older trucks have a cult following and are almost impossible to find. Although, rusted body panels are a non-issue here in AZ.

I wish they would expand it to other colors as well. My MGM roof looks like someone emptied out a box of white chalk on it.

Different problem. You have failing clearcoat, as every color will have given the right conditions.

The white problem is the white paint failing it's bond to the primer. When it peels, it's not to bare metal, it's to exposed primer, which is still tight to the metal.

My '14 RAV was redone last year. Every panel except the tailgate and plastic bumper cover.

Doesn't matter, it is still poor quality paint.

Go buy a ranger or colorado and see how you feel about this truck's "reliability issues." You have to keep in mind that the third gen tacoma is the best selling model of midsize pickups with hundreds of thousands cruising around trouble free as we speak. You can't judge the whole batch based off of one or two bad apples you see on here. There are more third gens than second gens, too, which can also explain the perceived higher reliability of the second gen. These trucks are rock solid.

First model year issues are to be expected, it ain't just a Tacoma thing. Not sure I would call any of the common 3rd Gen issues "nightmares", but some can be a bit pricey to correct like a timing cover leak.
