Thanks for the input guys

It seems like the general consensus is that the size of the 1st gen is better especially if it's on the dirt. It also seems the build quality is better too. I'm still on the fence though about upgrading but ill definitely consider all your guys' opinions and experiences. I'd really just be buying it to use as a weekend thing. Long travel and all that jazz so t-cases and 4x4 are more or less not a make or break for me

    Thanks again fellas!

The day I brought home my second gen. I miss that little truck for the size. I like the bluetooth and stuff in the 2nd gen, as well as the bigger motor. That little 3.4 at altitude (8-10K feet) was just struggling too much even when near empty. The 2nd gen has far less creaks and rattles of the dash plastic too. And can fit my 6 foto frame plus my two 6 foot friends and we can all be comfy.

But at the end of the day, I do find myself missing my little 1st gen sometimes. Maybe it is just the nostalgia.

1st gen probably the last of the compact trucks.

'05 Double Cab TRD Off Road 4x4 (would probably be still driving it if it hadn't slid off the highway into a ditch)
'13 Access Cab TRD Off Road 4x4 - current truck. Best of the bunch. Size, accessibility, bed capacity, ride, power, comfort over the 1st Gen unquestionable.

Rolled my 1st gen on highway. It was a 1996 side glen cab short box 4x4. Now have a 05 DCS (double cab short box) Trd offroad.

Went from 1998 Access cab 4cl auto to 2015 access cab auto v6.
The 98 was a great little truck never let me down (300,000 klms) but the 2015 is so much more civilized.
Ya it's a little larger but it it works for me.

I traded my '04 4x4 AC for a '15 DCLB trd sport about 15 months ago. Loved the '04. Was very nimble around town, had very good power to weight characteristics, ran flawlessly for the most part. An excellent, simple reliable truck.
The '15 is bigger, and not as "snappy" ... but, it's much more powerful, better on the highway ( gets better mileage on the highway too). Many more features on it, and rides better. It's also better in the snow.
Will see down the road if it's as reliable as the '04.
I do think it will be a better truck in the long run.
It's a bit difficult for me to compare, some things I liked better on the gen 1, some things better on the gen 2.

Went from a 89 standard cab, to a 95 1/2 taco, to a 2000 4runner, to a 2004 taco, to my now 2013 Taco DCLB. I would have loved to keep the 04 it was a great truck, but looking forwards to the future and a family I needed 4 doors. If I was to do it over again I would find a way to keep the 1st gen and get a 2nd gen. Interior size, power, and aftermarket on the 2nd gen is awesome but there is just something simple and stout about the little first gen. Gotta weigh your pros and cons and come up with what is most important to you.

No intact I like the room it has. I also have a Rottweiler that takes up the entire back seat so it feels just right;)
