    Hey guys new here ive owned a 97 taco a 02 tundra a 04 taco a 14 fj and now a 20 taco again.
My question comes to the 3rd gens and more specifically the long bed owners. I have an issue with the rear kinda bouncing around more noticable of course on the highway at 70 to 80 i can feel.it on the normal city roads but only because its freshly paved and im still kinda "jouncing" around if you will. Ive always thought maybevits a little lite back there and if i get some weight it would go away and sure enough it hasnt. Its driving me nuts cause as you can tell im a yota man through and through but the ride its giving me is really giving me reason to reconsider my choice. So im on here trying to figure outbif anyone has had a similar problem snd what you might try to fix it....

    Thanks for any help folks

My long bed had the same issue. I swapped out the stock offroad suspension for trd pro suspension and the bounce went away.

Makes some logical since to me control the spring return by more aggressive shocks would control your continuous bounce...at this point ill do about anything i love the damn truck but that one aspect is killing me.

    Thanks

You should see how bad the sports are after 10 years, they drive awful.

Switch to offroad suspension, or bilstein 4600s in the rear. You can sell the new shocks that you remove.

Offroad suspension has the same issue with bouncing. You need to get something much bigger that can handle the truck better.

My long bed does the same on certain parts of the freeway in Orange County. Significantly more noticeable when I have less than half a tank. I figure it’s just because of the lack of weight over the back. Once I put a full tank of gas and roughly 200 pounds of gear back there, it smooths out pretty nicely. At least it does on the OR stock shocks and leafs.

Quick fix would be to put a couple of bags of sand or gravel in the bed over the axle. Long bed, light composite bed, and higher spring rate is a trifecta for what you are feeling.

I'd experiment with tire pressure before I spent big money on suspension changes.

A little can make a BIG difference.

My SR5 dbl cab long bed is very smooth. It’s 2wd also. Loaded or empty I find it quite comfortable. Definitely no bounce.

As others have said, some weight in the back, or swap out the rear suspension.

Stock AF. My 68 Bronco and 2000 2.5RS get the mods.
My short bed is rather jiggly. I expected a little better from Toyota but given that so many characteristics of the vehicle are properly truck-like (that's partly why I love it), I accept the jiggly-when-empty nature of it.

My perception may be a bit warped though. The taco is replacing a 2006 silverado 1500 and those trucks had such an issue that GM made up a new term for it and started putting redesigned cab mounts on the front, different washers and using hydraulic mounts for the rear cab position. They called it "beaming" and said it was a byproduct of the stiffer frame. Mmhmm. Stiffer frame, cheaper engineering and bushing cost is what happened, I think.

5100s helped immensely on the chebby noted above. I was very pleased with them in general and when my OR shocks are toast, I'll go that direction. It's nice to see that so many people on here like them for the tacoma as well.

This sounds sort of similar to my access cab 2020...it delivers a harsher ride than use to especially when driving on bomb out roads in need of repair at speed. Don't if if its a combination of crappy shock calibration, and the leaf springs...i already installed a set of a/t tires from my gen1 tundra that helped some. Only thing that really helps is 400 lbs in the bed.

It's the floppy jello jiggler frame. Suspension will help, ultimately though, stiffening the chassis is the best approach. Unfortunately that is not a cheap or lightly involved project at this point.

I was checking it out while i was doing my first oil change and was shocked to see its not even a box in frame its like a three side frame with the inner exposed( use to seeing my fjs enclosed frame). And if my memory serves me right my other tacos had boxed in frames as well...anyways i am a mechanic and am a pretty good welder and have guys who race modified cars and do frame work on their cars all the time...im not scared of starting this project just curious where the main reinforced parts would go

There are kits to box the rear section, the mid frame rails will need to be custom, again, at this point. The mid frame rails hold a lot of hardware, so boxing them in is not without relocation headaches. The rear shackle hangers also allow flex, there are several kits to replace them. There is a factory brace from the older X runner, but it obstructs the spare tire a bit.

Google frame design, X braces, etc, and you'll see some ideas on what needs to be done. I have some ideas that I'll be sharing in my build.

IMO truck rides great. Yes bounces but to me it’s a truck not a caddy. Spent years in lowered and lifted trucks. My Tacoma is lifted and on e rated tires rides great and is a truck.

Before you start welding on your brand new truck, check the tire pressure
