I love my Para-Ords. I have a p14-45 limited and a warthog. Only way I'll part with them is from my cold dead hands.

oops, sorry for the late reply. I lost it in the SE Oregon wilderness on a Fall fishing/camping trip, not sure exactly how. It was cold the moring I packed up to leave, real cold and I 'prolly screwed up and left it on the bumper or something. Either way it was gone and when I discovered it was not where it was supposed to be I freaked out a bit. I filed a report with the Sheriff and 3 years later I got it back. It seems a kid found it out hiking and wanted to keep it but one of his friends convinced him to turn it in. Either way, it worked just fine and I was glad to have it back. It's the lower one in this picture after a full sandblast & refinish in mate-hot blue, with a few parts changes. IMG_E3949.jpg

An earlier test version didn’t have a safety. It could be carried either hammer down on a loaded chamber or with a round in the chamber.

The Army didn’t like it so the safety was added. The 1911 as adopted could be carried just like all the subsequent.

Here is my 1911, Colt Lightweight Commander. This is my first 1911 and it certainly won’t be my last.

No I believe it was designed to be carried Locked and Cocked with the safety on.

I worded his backwards, it's Cocked and Locked with safety on, known as condition 1.
there is no other way to carry a 1911. Period.

Had a S&W 1911PD when they first came out (5", scandium frame). That was my first handgun and a great one at that. Over time, I accumulated a ton of hours and rounds on Glocks, to the point where everything else felt wrong and I was not as fast or accurate under stress. I saw no point in keeping anything that I was less effective with.

Every now and then I get hot for the S&W Performance Center officer model, with the orange and black grip panels. Man that thing is sweet. But I know it would just sit in the safe.

This question has been ask since Browning began to develop the 1911. Early submissions had no thumb safety. But, the cavalry wasn’t happy with needing two hands to prepare the pistol to fire. They were not pleased about carrying a cocked and unlocked pistol so Browning added the thumb safety.

The military later pushed for folks to carry the pistol with an empty chamber. This was pretty much after the horses disappeared.

While overseas I saw 1911’s carried in every condition from no magazine to cocked and unlocked. A new officer arrived and mandated everyone carry condition three. No one paid attention to him and within a very short time he was carrying condition one and never said another word on the subject.

Interesting. I'd say do what is comfortable to you. I'd say in a self defense situation you may not have time to charge your firearm. To each their own and I am no expert by any means.

I had experience with the 1911 before enlisting. I was taught cocked and locked. Until the service I didn’t know folks kept them otherwise.
