I guess I never looked into what that tap even did- but even if I did, not having to remember an extra step would probably convince me to run the tap anyway.

Boat ramp. Any sort of tight off road trail where you don't want to put the strain on the front diff and cv's, which is also a good use case for the 2Low mod as well. I generwlly like to stay out of 4wd off road as much as possible. Getting stuck in 2wd gices you a chance to get stuck where 4wd or locking the rear will be enough to get unstuck. If you go 4low double locked and get the truck stuck the first time up past the frame in clay, you'll be in for a really long night (me, my old xj, and a puddle that didn't "look that bad").

But even in that very rare case, 4wd plus the locker is better than 2wd plus the locker. I don’t understand why one would want to use the locker without 4wd. It’s not like it’s easier to engage the locker.

A locker interferes with steering as well. It forces the wheels to turn at the same speed, but they cannot when turning, so the drivetrain binds up. It's the same principal as 4wd. It's effect is quite noticeable even in off-road situations and that's of the reasons why I only use the locker in certain situations.

Note that the front axle has more traction potential because it has more weight on it.

One other thing of note is AutoLSD mode (short push) is much better than the default TRAC+VSC mode. It has gotten me out of several parking spots without having to engage 4wd.

I have this black-ops anytime locker installed. It was easy to do and it has worked flawlessly for the last couple of trips since I put it in. It clicks in and it clicks out. Works in 2wd, 4hi, 4low. The reason I needed it was because I installed an MC TacoBox so I wanted to be able to lock when I was in 4.7 reduction without selecting factory 4low.

I chose the Black Ops over the experimental designs because I liked the switch and indicator light setup better. The Experimental has a little light that you have to drill and mount (I think...), whereas the Black Ops switch itself is backlit. I just liked that solution better, it seemed simpler, I dunno. Never heard anything but positives about the Experimental and I can offer only my good experience with Black Ops. Their über-bro militia marketing almost turned me off though, not exactly a fan of Call of Duty.

having just a little light and oem switch seemed simpler than adding a whole new switch to me.

if this Black Ops one isn't using the Overhead diff lock button, what does that button do now? Could I just remove the overhead button then, and install this in its place? That would seem like the ultimate PNP solution

Yes, you have it correct. I didn't do it that way because I have switch space to spare and it was easier to plop it in with the others in front of the shifter. You certainly can run it up the A pillar and use the overhead spot. I believe you still need to retain the factory switch (not certain), so don't disconnect it and just tuck it up safe. Mine is still wired up, I never touched it. In fact, I think it's bypassed now and doesn't work anymore.
