I’m still shopping for my Tacoma, preferably Access Cab/4 or 6 cylinder, but my dealer just got a double cab in stock. I haven’t seen many postings on base model SR Double Cabs, especially 4 cylinder with rear wheel drive. I read the comments from V6 and non Tacoma owners about how slow the 4 banger is, and just wondering if it is worth the test drive on the double cab. Is the MPG going to be worse than the 20/23 estimate? Most of my driving would be on roads with speed limits 50 mph or less. Not going off road, and driving in snow usually not an issue. Would this double cab struggle to ride at 70 mph on highway, vs access cab? Trying to decide if I rather have back seat room, or extra foot in bed with access cab. Any opinions would be appreciated. I would be trading in a 2011 F-150 regular cab/ no back seats 4x2 3.7 V6.

I have a 2016 Sr5 double cab. No struggle in maintaining 70 on the highway but it’s not the fastest in getting there. I average about 25 mpg overall. Personally, I find the first gen double cab to be faster and prefer to drive that one but it does feel like it’s going to tip over at times on the curves and the 3rd Gen doesn’t.

I own a 2017 SR5 double cab with the 2.7l engine. I was initially worried about it being too slow before I took delivery of it and that I might regret getting the 2.7l. The first time I drove it I knew immediately the 2.7l was more than adequate for this truck. It has no problem at all maintaining 70-75MPH, and will cruise at 80-85MPH with ease. It's certainly no speed demon, however it has no problem keeping up with, or passing on the highways. The engine is a little noisy while accelerating but I think it sounds pretty good. No regrets here at all.

I've got the Access cab 4x4 so its a bit heavier than your 4x2 would be. I also lug some gear full time in the bed. My GF would have loved for me to get the double cab and I believe that it would have had adequate performance if I did so, but I preferred the longer bed and I just like the way the Access cab looks.

6 foot bed still isn't a full bed, I've found that the extra foot isn't that much of a thing.. The extra back seat room is nice. I had a F-150 2 trucks ago. I don't miss it. I switched to this truck from a double cab 05 Tundra and like this truck much more. For me, I can haul all the same stuff in my Tacoma that I did in the F-150. Personally, I'd wait on a 6cyl, and where I live, 4x4 gets necessary at times, for at least 6 months out of the year.

OP, worth noting, I agree that the 4x4 is worth considering and more necessary than the v6 in my opinion, but if you need more power or plan to tow something "truck like" you should opt for the bigger motor.

I like my 2.7. Its a proven motor, I know its reliable, and its slightly more efficient. Plenty for my needs, but the v6 is necessary for more serious towing/hauling.

This is nice to hear. I'm also looking at an SR double cab with the 2.7. My wife has a '13 highlander with the 4 cylinder and we just took it on a 6k mile trip to Glacier and Yellowstone. It handled 80 mph on the highway just fine, despite being it being packed with 4 people and gear for a two week road trip. I was thinking surely the SR would perform similarly.

I'm not looking to tow/haul anything. Just light camping, mountain biking, hauling garden crap (mulch, soil, etc) home from Home Depot for the wife.

I bought a 2020 SR double cab, 2.7 RWD last year and it's been great, plenty fast enough around town, and fine on the highway so long as I keep it in S5 (locking out 6th gear). It easily maintains 80+ all day long. I've driven it from eastern PA to Chicago and back partly loaded and it was totally fine. Around town and on side roads, I keep transmission in S4, and go to S5 on the highway. Gas mileage is around 20-21 MPG consistantly.

Having a 6 ft. bed allows for easy transportation of 2 dirtbikes or the ability to set up a platform to hold a mattress and comfortably sleep 2 adults or uncomfortably sleep 2 adults and a squirmy 6 YO if you have a canopy. For some, a 5ft bed is a dealbreaker. I mean it is even called a "bed" after all. For the marginal increase in cost, I'd go 6cyl. 4x4 is nice and allows you to get stuck in places you can't get to in 2wd. You can get most places in 2wd, but snow isn't fun

My 2015 2.7 double cab Prerunner is lifted, has BAMF armor and bigger tires. its fine. Gas mileage.....I notice the difference from stock.

2.7L SR 4 x 2 Double Cab owner here. Plenty for my needs. I came from a 2.4 L Jeep patriot, for reference, before getting into my current Taco. Aside from this trim being within my price range, I got it because I don’t tow or haul anything that I think would necessitate a V6. Do I sometimes wish I got a V6? Yes, but again thats only sometimes when I’m trying to merge on the highway. I live in Southern NV, no snow, fairly flat and in a large metro area. Its used as a daily commuter and weekend off roader that can haul some camping equipment or some mountain bikes. I’ve learned to keep it in S5 when doing hwy driving, and use the ECT power every now and then if i want that extra oomph. Once up to speed it can cruise and keep speed just fine. Hills sometimes are an issue but not enough for me to despise the truck. Also fit larger tires and im going to upgrade the suspension to give me a tiny lift upfront. Otherwise its the perfect truck for my current lifestyle.

We own a 2022 DCSB 2WD SR with the 2.7L. It does great. I run with traffic on interstate highways having 75 mph speed limits. Usually get 24 - 26 mpg in the process. Obviously if you live in Canada like Woofer you need a 4WD. Much of the USA it is just added weight and service costs.

I need 4x4 where I live but these trucks have great value. They run around 30 grand msrp here and they don’t stay on the lot long. If I lived in south GA still I’d get one all day long and not think twice about it.

I believe there's an adapter you can buy then install yourself. I'm currently looking into it.

I love the little 2.7l motor. I just needed 4x4 for all the snow and man does it seem to handle decent.

Agree with everyone saying slow on the speed. I got Pedal Commander and if you do the max settings, the wheels turn before the car goes- love it. I found out post purchase getting it tuned is the best option and its a little more than the PC!
