I think the reality is the thread title. He didn't ask anyones advice on their state laws. It is not illegal federally. Yes it may be illegal in certain areas but again that wasn't what the OP was even asking.
If some members have done it, provide him some feedback.
I hate these high and mighty people coming on here and claiming things are 100 percent this or that.

By the way, if you claimed you couldn't see the lights you would need something called evidence. Even a shitty lawyer could have tail lights tested. As long as they meet minimum requirements of function your argument goes down the river and you look like a liar.

With that said, I would always test the visibility of the tail lights if they are tinted to ensure they actually do work at night. There was that one idiot that posted that he painted his tail lights and they basically were useless.

Aside from the legality of tinting the tail lights, Why so much hate to a guy who simply wants blacked out tails? Offer him a good way to go about it, or a valid reason not to. Some silly opinionated statement about living with his mother just makes you look silly. So much of what people do on here is for the look or to make it their "own". Let the guy stand out how he wants. I put the euro tails on my 09 and think they looked great. I will be buying the first set of blacked out tails for my 16 when they are available. It really makes no difference if anyone else likes them, unless they are paying for the truck.

Honestly. I like the murdered out look. On my h3 I blacked out all and any chrome. My wheels were black and the hummer was black. I traded that in and had a vw Tiguan. It too was black. And also had black wheels. I had smoked led after market tail lights in the hummer. So I wanted to see if anyone had done a taillight tint/smoke on their tails.

A little late. But here is front and back tinted. Looking for a good HID kit go with since lighting in front is pretty low at night. Any suggestions?

Man I really misread that thread title..I thought he asked for pics of blacked out tail lights..
Turns out the title was "is blacking out my tailights illegal, what are your thoughts, and would you do it to your truck?"

Went through this thread this morning and was reading the previous posts. Not to beat a dead horse, but I'd counter that this is illegal federally. The National Highway Safety Administration as well as the DOT established standards all vehicle manufacturers must meet in order to produce vehicles. Everything from airbags to lights/lenses are required components meeting stringent standards in order to be sold here. If I'm not mistaken, Title 49 Standard 108 deals with lights/lenses and what specifications they must meet. That's why all manufactured vehicles (other than motorcycles) must have a minimum of two taillights, red in color, and have retro-reflective material present. If these standards weren't present, cars would be manufactured without any taillights, or they'd be blue and purple lights when they left the lot. That simply cannot be done.

But because these are federal requirements, officers/deputies typically can't enforce federal specs unless there are specific codes implemented in their state allowing them to do so. So states will implement laws to reflect the requirements of the federal standards. In most cases, this is an overly broad, non-specific law stating that lighting cannot be modified from its original design or using some other such language.

Again, I understand the original post wasn't about the legality of the tint, but I thought I'd offer a modicum of insight on this based on my experience. Have a wonderful day.
