If you're worried about rear visibility then I suggest you don't have a truck. Trucks don't have the rear visibility like a car. Besides an extra inch of rear visibility "below the eye level" isn't a safety issue, that's why we have side mirrors and back up cameras (which you can turn on if you wanted at a flick of a switch mod). It would make sense if it was an inch from the top of the glass.

Rear visibility in the 2nd gen DCSB was great. Better than a lot of sedans I've driven. Why not get a truck if if I can find one that fulfills my needs? You can't always rely on cameras and mirrors. and that extra inch is certainly a safety issue if it means I'm about to cut off a Miata that I didn't know was there because it was below the visibility out of my rear view due to the tonneau cover.

I hear you man but I don't see the argument where one inch from the bottom of the bed will compromise safety. Other then side mirrors and cameras, that's why we are taught back in my old days to look over your shoulders and both rear view mirror and side before you switch lanes or turn.

I know it won't be by much, but I like every little bit I can get. Especially since the 2015 had enough cargo space for me, and the 2016 adds that extra inch. I'm leaning towards a retractable tonneau anyway, which will pretty much give me the best of both, as well as being able to be fully open without obscuring the rear window.

Not sure that the tonneau cover seen in the pic and video in this thread is the actual cover that is going to come with the truck. I was at the dealer today to see if I could add the cover and it is not even an option POST PRODUCTION. The vehicle has to be ordered pre-production with it. So, the salesman and I were thinking that maybe the factory cover is sprayed the same color as the truck? It is also possible that Toyota just added an aftermarket version for the photo/video. Not sure. If anyone hears more about this, please post.

Meanwhile, the dealer did have an aftermarket cover that is tri fold. It actually works really well. In fact, it will fold up in a way where you CAN get the entire use of the bed if you want without having to remove it.

If you properly adjust your mirrors there is no need to "look over your shoulders". It is unsafe since it means you are not looking ahead of you.

Not to mention the natural tendency to turn the wheel slightly towards the direction you look, or to overcorrect for that tendency.

The cover that comes with the truck from the factory should have the lock keyed to match your truck key. Not sure if dealers have that capability if you buy the cover later. It depends how Toyota designed that lock at to whether its retrofitable.

If you read what I said, you would comprehend when I say "look over your shoulder" that "only" applies when you drive in reverse. Are you telling me you would trust your mirrors 100% when you back up? I know I don't. That's why kids are run over in the first place.

 See post above. If that's the case we would have people crashing into each other everyday they are driving. You're logic

He's obviously not talking about backing up. Context is key.

I said "slightly." Adjectives are key.

If you're going to be rude, at least have the decency to pay attention.

What are you going to do when you are hauling stuff in your box. Like a Washer or dryer for example? If you are worried about a tonneau cover rising a inch about the box. It will also block your view when backing up.

Those are rare occurrences. I also straight-up don't like the look of a tonneau that isn't flush mounted. It just looks cheap to me.
