Got my VFR rating in '85.
    Wife & I bought a 1998 Cessna 172R in Nov '99.
She got her VFR rating in '01.
We both "almost" completed IFR training when a change in economic circumstances in early '03 required us to sell the plane.
We've rented a few time since, but just not the same as the freedom of owning your own.

Looking back - BEST 3+ YEARS of MY LIFE! :D

Had several friends that went the career pilot route - only one made it to the majors. The others "starved" & lived in their vans. These days, with nationalization of the airlines imminent and the questionable status of pensions, I would definitely avoid aviation as a career. As a recreational activity though, it can't be beat! :)

Anyone heard or Big Bend CC? Its a college in Moses Lake, WA. You can go for two years and earn your commercial certificate, AND a transfer degree so you can just transfer to a University when your done, and do whatever you want there.

I drive the Cl215, Birddog and soon our brand new Cl415.

Work all summer with winters off.. a busy season for us is about 150 to 200 hours. We don't fly that much but when we do it is simply awesome.

Here's a view from my office..

... ^^^ ... I always wanted to do a "home built experimental" ... but never got around to it. That takes a tremendous amount of dedication and focus. Much more difficult than building a Heathkit color TV as a little kid. :D

I had a friend who built one to about 95% and then sold it before the engine was installed. That was 20 years ago and I forgot what he was building.

Good luck with your "building venture" and I have saved your website and will watch your progress. :D

PS ... 4x4 metal electrical boxes and conduit in your garage shows you are picky too. (could be code though).

Those are awesome. I saw a flight of 4 come into Furnace Creek in Death Valley. I wish I had the money, skill, tools, location, and patience to build one of my own. Looks like a great project. I do have some plans for a Rutan design handed down from my father.

What a great job in aviation. Told my dad (stopped logging hours at over 27k) when I was younger I wanted to be a firebomber pilot. He asked if I was crazy. Still looks kick ass.

Just picked up my private two weeks ago. Must say I'm blessed to have the best place to practice. Nerve racking at the same time though. My cross country solos were to Lanai then to Maui and Molokai. Nothing like being over water the whole time. But couldn't beat the views though.

Yep it's a pretty good gig. We do ALOT of sitting around.. it's not a job for building time.. but our flying is some of the best you can get. Flying under 100 ft in a big pig of a plane at gross weight in smoke and turbulence.. often with 1 to 5 other tankers plus a few helicopters (wish I was a fling-wing guy.. they have too much fun) all in close proximity to each other.

Thanks! It's been a lot of fun so far. Couple'a thoughts...

I think anyone can, with a little practice, acquire the skills to build an airworthy machine. I had never done sheet metal work before attempting this project, but if you want to do something sometimes you just gotta dive in.

As far as tools, you just start by buying one. Then another, and another... And soon enough you have all the basics coved. Location? Ha! There are threads out there that document guys building in townhomes, even apartments! Crazy bastards really want it.

Good luck with the Rutan design (which one is it?), hopefully you will get it started some day.

And to the patience factor, well... I am still working on that.:D

Hey I have a commercial/inst license and I haven't flown in several yrs, due to job, money, life ect....anyway since its been so many yrs since I've flown last, what would it take for me to get current again? I know I need a new medical, and to shoot some approaches for the inst, but would I have to go up with an FAA examiner too?

Doubt you would have to ride with an examiner. You're certificated! All you need is currency.
