It has been five years since I installed my 285's, when does everyone start talking about my tires?

OP, if you get 285s expect to trim the fender liners at the very least. You will not be able to run stock wheels without spacers, or you will have to get aftermarket wheels. You may have to do the cab mount chop (I haven't, I don't come close to it). Its really not that hard to run 285's.

^^^This plus expect to remove the front mud flaps. I haven't done the cab mount chop either. I am running off road wheels on mine and have spidertrax spacers but haven't installed them yet. When I do I will probably have to do the cab mount chop though.

What are the wheel specs besides 17 x 7? Someone can answer better if they know the full specs.

If you don't do any off roading and have 2.5"+ you should only have to remove the front mud flaps and minor fender liner trimming. That's all I had to do and I only rub while turning on driveway entrances and whatnot.

No they are all different. My fjc trails teams stick out about .5" further than the stock or wheels.

To op the amount of trimming you have to do depends on wheel offset and if you add aftermarket uca's. You can split the difference with 275. The main problem with 17's vs 16's is the cost. I was going to get the same 17's with either 275 or 285 and sort of was talked into the 16's with 285 and I don't regret it a bit. Minor trimming on fender flares bottom edge front and rear of wheel well. I did bmc way before wheels and tires so I really don't even know if I needed it. I've heard of guys not having to trim at all but I think that's rare and I think they kept stock OR or sport wheels. The bfg ko2 are bad ass. I love mine

yeah those are factory wheels they are refferring to aftermarket wheels. i have 17x9 wheels with a 4.5 bs and -12 offset. i have started with a 3" spacer lift which will be changed shortly to bilstein but i needed no cmc, no wheel well trimming, only remove mudflaps and snip the bottom corner of the flare you can't even tell it was done
    285/70/17's

That would be around 4.25" back spacing. Your off road wheels are 5.25 back spacing.

Means the 4.25 BS would stick out about an inch further than what you have now. Which when turning could make you need a cab mount chop. When the wheel sticks out further it essentially increases the turning arc of the wheel which brings it closer to the cab mount when fully turned back and closer to the fender flare in the front.

To add to this problem you also have different tire manufacturers that have different size tires with the same number's ex 285/75/16 Nitto may not be the same size as a 285/75/16 Yokohama. So someone with one brand tire in that size may fit perfect and another brand may not fit.

That's depends on what you're going to use the truck for. Mine are D rated which is 8 ply. E are 10 ply and will ride pretty harsh in our lightweight truck. C is a 6 ply tire and rides better. For off road use most don't go under a D for the extra protection.

Personally I wouldn't want to ride around all the time on an E rated tire.

Im running 275 on 885 coils. Very slight rub at full lock in reverse. No trimming.
KO2 comes in 275 but only E rated

E rated might be less likely to get punctures since it has more ply
