I would say that Dust In The Wind, and the album it's from, Point of Know Return, was the beginning of Kansas being NOT Progressive. Their first three albums and most of the fourth, Leftoverture, were extremely Prog Rock.

Start with the first 2 albums, In The Court Of The Crimson King and In The Wake Of Poseidon. Then skip to the last 2 "classic" albums - Starless & Bible Black and Red. While I'm not a huge fan of the later stuff, the current lineup does a great job with the older music. Check out the recent CD/BluRay set "Radical Action (To Unseat The Hold Of Monkey Mind)".

Another great band to check out was the Prog Supergroup 801 -

Jeff Beck's Wired must have been mentioned somewhere around here.

Listening to 'Blue Wind' now. Yeaaah!

Black Clouds and Silver Linings is an excellent album. A couple after that are meh...Distance Over Time seems to have gotten them back on track.

Petrucci just released a solo album "Terminal Velocity" back together with Portnoy to make it, I'm really enjoying it!

my go to album is Metropolis pt 2: Scenes From a Memory. I saw them once live, my uncle took me to a concert they had in CT back in the 90s and I have yet to see them since they tour more on the international side and to be honest Im not going out of my way to go to a show anymore.

I got to see them live for the first time last year when they came to Ottawa. Was actually the 20th anniversary of Metropolis, they played most of the album...small venue, amazing show.

Would have liked to have seen them back in the day, 90's were a great time!

    oh yeah!!!!

Rush, Kansas and Yes got me into it...then Queensryche, Fates Warning sealed the deal in the 80's...Dream Theater brought me into the 90's....

and now it is Ne Obliviscaris; Leprous; Karnivool; Porcupine Tree; Nightwish; Animals As Leaders; Caligula's Horse; Haken; Frost* In Mourning...

    it is still alive!!!

Is Polyphia prog rock or is it too poppy? They write some damn catchy hooks.

Every time I listen to one of their songs I ask myself, self, why do you even bother picking up a guitar?

Yeah, it's extremely disheartening, and fosters imposter syndrome.

.... I'll just stick to playing grindcore and doom.

Great thread, brings back some memories, hazy as they are. Not sure if we even called it progressive rock back in the early 70s. My go to bands were Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Gentile Giant, EL&P, Zappa, King Crimson and others I can't recall at the moment.

Lucky that I got to see all play live, most multiple times. Highlights were seeing Genesis first U.S. show and Floyd's U.S. debut of Dark Side of the Moon.

Good to know the music still lives on.

Yesssss Jason slaps, big ATR fan over here.

It's so cool how these tech death dudes get bored and start these weird side projects trying to one up themselves.

Have you heard Kansas' last 2 albums, The Prelude Implicit and Absence of Presence?

I'm no musuc genre guru but it seems some of the newer prog videos posted here are more metal. Some have very intricate parts, but too much growling.

You heard of Ayreon? A Dutch music genius named Arjen Lucassen that writes/composes the music.

I'm not necessarily a Prog fan but I don't know how anybody that likes any kind of music that can't enjoy this one. Prog fans should see at least one familiar face:

This is kind of a goofy one, but I get a kick out of it:

An example concert where the whole lineup comes out at the end:
