Any reason for me to go 4x4 over 4x2?

I'm looking to get a double cab long (aka regular) bed 4x2 v6 pre-runner (since pre-runner is the only one available in long bed) and I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking some benefit of 4x4? I'm not in a region/climate that necessitates it nor do I plan to take it off road.

Only concern would be resale, but even then most people from LA would never need it. Save the money for future mods!:)

If off-loading is not a concern for you, than you'll be fine with a 4x2, also known as Prerunner. I had one with the TRD Offroad package and the locker helped off-road, considering it was 2wd. Since i hauled a lot of equipment for work, i wish i had gotten the long bed, but with a tailgate extender, it worked okay.

Keep us updated on your purchase.

For me it was a no brainer, i'd rather have 4wd and not need it than need it and not have it. An extender will also work when you need it. Easier to park too.

More than likely if you have to ask the question, 4x2 will do just fine for you. If you never get anywhere to get stuck, then 4x2 will work for you. Ask a guy that has 4x4, and he doesn't want anything different.

    Things I need to tow.
I grew up in LA and I'd get the 4X4 any time. Not just Big Bear in the winter, but Mammoth Lakes in the winter and Pismo Beach in the summer. Even if you don't go any of those places, someone who does will want your rig when you're ready to sell.

Not going to use it dont buy it. Someone will say better have it and not use it then need it and not have it. Guess what its a few grand for 4x4 if your ass gets stuck you can get out for only 75 from a wrecker

Toyota's website is a bit funny in that the double cab long bed 4x4 is on a different page. I went with the TRD Sport package since I'm 95% of the time on the road but occasionally tow stuff and go to the mountains during winter.

I've used the 4x4 (Low) a couple of times when towing a trailer. The extra traction is nice when you need to make an uphill start on wet roads. This is especially true if the load shifts toward the back of the trailer making the back end of the truck light enough to peel out, i.e. in 4x2 mode.

    Thanks for the replies -

My grammar was unclear about the long bed: I meant that there are two 4x2's offered - one with a 2.7L 4 cylinder, and the pre-runner with the 4.0 v6, and of those 4x2's, only the v6 pre-runner has the long bed option.

Because I live in LA, gas mileage is a concern, so that's the main reason why I was leaning towards 4x2 instead of 4x4. But is it really that much of a difference? Already kinda bummed that the Tacoma doesn't get better mileage as is.

I hadn't thought about Big Bear/Mammoth/Lake Arrowhead etc which is a very good point, as I'd love to get up there more often.

I'd get a bed extender regardless, it just seems like what's the point of getting a truck at all if you're going to have a dinky little bed? And since the "long" bed on the double cab is the same as the "standard" bed on the other cabs I figured that would be the best of both worlds. It will still be smaller and easier to park than a Tundra double cab, right?

I agree with you to some extent but sometimes getting stuck can become a life threatening situation. Snow storms or shitty weather can make things go downhill quickly.
