THIS!!!! I since i got my truck i have said to my self more space would be nice, and even than i did not NEED the extra 1’ of space. i do wish the bed was about 3 to 4" deeper(taller sides) more than having it 1’ longer. I load something in the bed at least once a week.

The reality is that you may pay a little more up front for the 4X4, but you will get it right back if you ever sell. With that being said, why not buy a 4X4 just in case, you will never lose a dime buying it.

As far as the resale value, yes it is more and it opens up your truck to a whole new group of potential buyers. I will never buy a 2 wheel drive truck, and neither will many, many other people. That right there is why 4X4's hold their value so well, they are just more in demand.

Get a 4x4 if u can afford it. If not. PreRunner will do just fine. Know your needs. Unfortunately, TW makes me wish I got a 4x4. Otherwise, Use that money for mods!

only down side i can think of is MAYBE 1 less MPG. but when you get stuck(even in snow covered road) you will not regret having it.

It took me a while to find a good used taco DCSB trd off road with 4wd around here. TONS of pre runners but i HAD TO HAVE 4WD. I’m like you i’d never own a 2wd truck.

I had the same question and I'm about 95% city, 5% off road.

All you'll need is a locker and you can get a lot of places with it. Not as good as 4x4 obviously but if you want to go hit some trails a locker and airing down will get you pretty far.

Get the 2wd, save the cash and rent an SUV if you ever want to go to the snow. You will save in gas, insurance and maintenance.

If money is tight then get the prerunner. But if you can swing the extra $ for the 4X4 (especially after you factor in resale) then I think you can't go wrong going that route. My thoughts, you posted in the forum, so you may be second guessing on the prerunner. So I would say get the 4X4 so you dont kick yourself in the future. Lots of dudes on here were in your same boat, saying Ill never use it, this and that and went with the prerunner. They end up regretting not getting the 4X4. And regret at least in my experience is expensive.

All that stuff is negligible at best. Yeah upfront cost is more, but in the long run, its pennies. Renting an SUV, come on bro. Dude has a truck yet if it snows out you recommend he rent an SUV! SOFT.

Maybe you should take a trip out to California. Unless you live up in the mountains there is 0 need for 4x4. We dont get snow and it barely even rains. There absolutely no need for a 4x4 where he lives. Why should he fork out extra money for something he specifically said he doesn't need or even plan to offroad? Pennies??? He could fill the back of his truck with all the pennies he will save!

have owned trucks for many, many years. love the "go anywhere, do anything" feel of a pickup truck, and it "must" be a 4x4. of course, I live in the northeast, I might feel differently if I lived out in "la-la land". ;)

Agreed. If you don't go off-roading 4wd is overkill for California unless you live in very specific areas or visit said areas often at specific times of the year.

I get where I want/need to go in CO with 2wd. Must be the driver.

The 4x2 doesn't hold value as well is a myth. They all do well.

Of course you're right, but surely you've noticed that people often don't buy what they need or is what is best suited to where they live. You've no doubt noticed the high density of SUV's and trucks in flat, dry parts of CA, especially in the SoCAL urban areas. The black Escalade is the ride of choice and you'd probably be stunned at the percentage of them GM builds that end up in LA. Even worse, it only takes five minutes on any freeway in LA to realize the entire German auto industry would fail in six months if CA fell off into the ocean. I'm all for getting what you need and the OP would be smart to get a Prerunner. But lots of people go for "badass" whether or not they need it, whether it be dogs (pit bull verses collie), wide-screen TV's (60" verses 42") or vehicles ('63 Impala 409 w/4speed and dual quads verses '63 Rambler American with the 196 and "Twin-Stick" floor shift.) If people use good judgment and listen to their economics, they'll do what's best for them.

When the zombies come for you, and they will come for you, you are going to need the fastest escape possible, and that may mean you will need to go off road. Better to be safe than to be sorry.

I've never seen a Toyota truck that didn't have insane resale value 2wd or 4wd. Last time I checked the badge still says Toyota on the grille.

Also out here in California, most private land is well protected or restricted to motor vehicles. Most places to really Four-Wheel are at designated (often crowded) places miles away from any civilization. The only exceptions are people that own property outside of the city with land, that can off road on their own property.

It's not like the wild west, mid west or south where you can just "Hit a mud hole" on the way home from work (Damn do I ever miss those days as a teen though) But my point is 4WD is nice, but largely not necessary in California at all.

As far as the dead horse about re-sale. If you buy a $30K SR5 4x4, DC, V6 chances are in 5 years it will still be worth 80% of that value based on traditional Tacoma values and patterns.

If you purchased a $26K PreRunner SR5, DC, V6 it also will be worth around 80% of it's value in 5 years. So I don't get the comments if you buy a 4x4 Tacoma "You will get MORE back" lol what does that mean??

Like I said earlier, never had any problem selling a Toyota truck 2wd or 4wd. So those comments are largely invalid. Just because there is a huge market for 4x4 Tacomas, there is also a huge market for ANY kind of used Tacoma as well.

When I bought my 2009 Prerunner, I thought, "I don't plan on off-roading. I just need it to tow and haul". Before I knew it, I had the mod bug and started to get more into off-roading and expedition camping. So eventually I traded it in for my '12 4x4. Just a thought

Heck, I didn't even want a PreRunner when I got my '14 in April, but had to because every white, 5-lug, Access Cab allocated to all the California dealers back then were pre-sold before they hit dealers.

I actually found one that just showed up that day, at the time 45 minutes near me. Told salesman hold it for me I will be there in 1/2 hour. I showed up and he said a construction company wired the money "Full price" for the truck in the time it took for me to drive to the dealer.

Then he showed me on the Toyota back screen (Screen with all the orders and everything being made or built) Showed every 2wd AC, 5-lug as pre-sold. If I wanted one I had to order it and wait 2-3 months.

Couldn't wait so I purchased a PreRunner instead. The point is that there is a huge 2wd sub-market out there, and yes it's mostly commercial, but still that is huge demand.

Another Pool Guy buddy of mine, who just got out of the biz, sold his white 2012, AC, 5-lug, 2wd with 22K miles in 1 day for full asking price, basically what he paid new for it.

**I'm surprised this thread hasn't escaladed to which 4x4 should I get? Base, SR5, TRD Sport or TRD-Off Road. That's when the $#&* really gets thrown across the room, and butts get sore.

Toyota should just build one truck the TRD-Pro and call it a day, since anything less than that is WORTHLESS as verified by TW.
