Every year has had their own issues/tsb's, but my early '16 hasn't had any. Replaced the battery, but that's it. Just test drive it and make sure whatever year you get you are aware of the issues.

I'm trading in my '16 shortbed for a Tacoma longbed, I'm specifically looking for another '16 or '17 to avoid having to deal with Toyota Safety Sense.

Got my 2016 SR5 back in may, certified used. it had 58k when i bought it and the only issue i have noticed so far is the leaf spring squeak. Other than that it has been great as my daily and some short road trips within state.

16 here, no problems. Only thing I don’t like is the fact that the tailgate has its own separate key.

My '16 has the P&T packages. I believe BSM comes with the tech package and heated seats are in the premium package. 80K on mine and no issues other than a problem with the BSM after driving thru a heavy snow storm that I was able to fix myself. Been a great truck so far.

Have you found a 2WD Off Road yet? If not, prepare to have your mind blown.

how many owners? Bought locally? Relatively low miles? No major mods or accidents? If so, I wouldn’t hesitate.

I wish I would have waited for the 18's. If memory servers, that is when they fixed most of the issues with the shifting.
I have a 16 MT but they got much better then as well if I recall.

Still loving the 2016 Access Cab Off Road. Auto, no TSBs, never been to the dealer for anything. Optional BSM was the reason the 3rd Gen has the plastic rear bumper. I bought the Non- JBL premium and technology package mainly to ditch the faux chrome bumpers, which added BSM, heated seats and the big screen. No sunroof. The only thing later models have that I wish my 2016 had is the power rear slider, not a fan of the auto braking, lane drift avoidance, or the adaptive cruise control.

I have a 2016 OR with all the tech and comfort packages (I forget what they were called!). I'm a little above 50k miles right now. There were a few bumps -- I pretty much experienced all the major issues (like the resetting trip meters on the combo meter). All were addressed under warranty and the truck has never left me on the side of the road. Well, once my battery died, but that's just a consumable item and I don't count it (more of a shit-happens kind of thing). Heh. I think a '16 is well vetted by now, and the hiccups of being a "new model" are sorted out.

I think TSS was the main new tech feature that wasn't available in 16. Otherwise they're very similar trucks. I have Blind-Spot Monitoring and Parking Sensors, but the fancier stuff didn't come out for a year or two later. I'm happy about that, because I hear lifts can mess up the TSS and I'm glad it's not something I had to deal with.

I used to own a Jetta, so I have a better understanding for what a real piece of crap a vehicle can be. This truck has been a dream by comparison.

edit: maybe a checklist of known issues is in order? that would be a great pinned topic for people planning to buy a used third gen.
