i had a 2016, and now have a 2020. the transmission in the 2020 feels better and shifts smoother than it did in my 2016. other than that, it feels the same.

My uncle is the type of person who gets a new vehicle every few years; I'm tempted to buy it from him!

If you dont have push button start then the ignition/door/tailgate are the same. On the push start trucks the key blade in the fob only works the emergency key hole under the door handle cap, it will not fit the tailgate. There is a seperate key in the center console lid for the tailgate.

Im at 50k miles on my 2016. I had two transmission TSB's and it came "no more than a quart low" of fluid from the factory per my purchasing dealer. It was topped up at 2600 miles and I havent had a shifting issue since. My a/c blower motor went out at 4200 miles and melted the blower motor controller in the process. Warranty replaced both, then it was recalled last year and replaced again for the recall. Other than that my truck has been flawless. The battery finally took a dive on me last year. 3-4 years in Texas is pretty average battery life.

The 4x2 would be the only bad part.

I've been driving a 4x2 for the last decade with no noteworthy issues!

My 11/15 Texas built 2016 has about 50k miles and not one problem, in fact the truck is barely broken in at this point.

No leaking, weeping, howling, rattles, shudder or shakes, still on the original battery and windshield, paint not fading or peeling, AC works great, head unit never cuts out.

Tell your buddy to take it on a nice long test drive and if he likes the way it rides, go for it.

I just bough last August a 2016 with 19K miles I don't regret it. It was flawless. Transmission has no issues great ride.

The automatics are keyless entry/start but a dedicated key for the tailgate. The manuals had a keyed ignition that works in the tailgate.

2016 was a total redesign, but based off the same frame... the body is entirely different, bed is different, interior is different, engine and trans are different.. I bought a 2016 TRD OR DCSB.. only had a few issues that were taken care of... howling fromt he lower control arms (dealer installed caps on the drain holes, I plan to install some LCA skids to comletely eliminate this.. the Trans TSB re-programming was done, and reduced the shifting/hunting. and this last summer, i noticed a metallic like high pitched scraping noise consistant with RPM's, and only happened when the engine was hot.. was proven to be my HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) on the passenger valve cover towards the rear. it was replaced under warranty and is a known TSB. other than that no issues.. truck runs great, gets into the 18mpg range with 32" tires/heavier rims, and a decent load of gear on it...

Not a refresh at all. Body, trans, interior, engine, etc... are all different from the previous Gen.

The cab is actually exactly same as the 2nd Gen except the addition of high strength steel.

A little more than a refresh, as a brand new 3.5 V6 motor was included.

Myself I'm happy my '17 doesn't have all that safety crap on it that the newer Taco's have. Do it, do it!

As was stated above this is a push to start truck problem.
