After upgrading to the Sony XAV AC6000, I’m curious if there’s a reason to keep the stock Pioneer head unit?

    No, you don't.

But OP has already replaced the head unit and is asking if they should keep it in storage forever.

+1 to no unless you maybe want to sell it one day and someone wants it stock.

you lose the compass, and street info for sure. Also the maintenance integration with the center console.

i kept mine out of a 2008 and put in a head unit with back up camera, and kept the stock one. i traded it in for my 2016 and the sales manager mentioned the head unit because it looked stock but with a camera. he said he would like to put one in his wife's truck. I told him i still had the old one and gave it to him to switch back into my trade so he could make his wife happy.

point of this long winded post is keep it, you never know.

Thanks everyone. This is one of the first purchases I’ve made in decades where I wasn’t stressing about resale value, so I’m not concerned about returning it to stock.

If I have to sell it (and that would be a ‘have to’ ‘cause this toy is going to the end times with me) they’ll have to take it as is.

I’m getting ready to cut the front bumper for the Body Armor Hiline, so it will def not be going back to stock by my hands. <—- also because I’ve been on the planet for a bit, these smack of famous last words

God forbid you should total it one day, but you may find that the insurance payout doesn't distinguish between the upgraded head unit and the stock head unit. In which case, you could pull the upgraded unit and replace it with the old stock one. That all depends on just how nice the new unit is, but I did experience that with a vehicle that was totaled once and I was glad I still had the old head unit stored in the garage attic.

Makes sense. I just have a tendency to packrat stuff, hence the question. Ultimately it takes up little room, so I’ll tuck it away.

I am going to say it depends on the head unit. I have a Sony 9500es installed with a Maestro and I lost the turn-by-turn navigation (which I think everyone does), song/artist info, and caller info. Others have reported that their song/artist info and caller info still works but they are using a different head unit than I am.

To OP, keep it if you ever want to go back to factory or if your aftermarket head unit gets stolen

+1 keep the stock stuff. it isn't always your choice.

i went through this 3 months after buying my brz in 2014 (a month after fully replacing the entire sound system)--another driver decided their stop sign was optional.. and currently helping another brz owner with a similar situation after he took the last 4 years to custom build his own STI-spec variation of the car that subaru never offered--pulling into his driveway, a van driver decided to try to go around...

in my case, my penchant for never modding stock parts, always modding a replacement part, and holding onto the stock parts, paid off. i was able to entirely remove the brand new sound system, leave vehicle complete with the stock gear to meet the insurance-required 'car must be complete' requirement for the payout, and it all went into the replacement brz, meaning i wasn't out an additional $2k in audio gear.

i replaced the door speakers in my 2016 and tossed the stock ones.
now thinking of trading in for a 2023 and wish i still had them to put back in my 2016 when i trade it.
also installed the home Link rear view mirror and did keep the stock one, so i can put that back.
