My dentist also dips and he told me this one day while I was there. He said that if you keep your dip in for less then 15 minutes then you are much less likely to have any serious side effects.

How much I believe of that I dunno but it gives me peace of mind haha but I usually take medium size pinches now cause I used to dip a shit ton and take humongous pinches and keep em in for 45 minutes at a time and I now have rather large intentions in my gums.

damn that sounds solid. I haven't had skoal in a while but I might have to get a can of vanilla and apple for the super bowl so I can chew my pain away (I'm a Niner fan) lol

Started dipping snuff when I was 15, quit when I turned 31 in December 2010. Only way I could quit was with Chantix and I still to this day think about throwing in a dip. Seems to be fading very very slowly. Used to dip 1-1.5 cans a day.

Broke down and bought a can the other day. Skoal Extra Crisp blend, just as crappy as I remember.

I miss Citrus pouches more and more everytime I dip.

flavor of it has nothing to do with it. it's all about the date (which relates to its moisture) and how long you leave it in.

but yes, sometime's i'll get "gator lip" if the sleeve i bought isn't fresh. but i don't put dips in the front, i go from left to ride side so the other side has time to "recover" lol.

"gums get wrinkled" is called keratosis. The result of chew being an irritant to the gums.

I've chewed for a decade or so, anywhere from a dip a day to a few. I used to smoke but I dunno, I don't work in an environment where I can smoke or chew, and smoking just got old after a while. It just trailed off to where I haven't smoked in maybe 6 months.

Years ago I got a white spot on my lip for a few days, and got so paranoid over it I scheduled an appointment with an oral surgeon to look at it. By the time I got in to see the doctor, it had almost gone away. He looked at it and said it was nothing. I told him I was chewing partly to try to stop smoking. The doctor said to me that while he wasn't encouraging me to do either, if he had to advise me, he would definitely say chewing was much, much safer than smoking. He said that when you get oral cancer, it is only local, in the beginning, and it can be fairly easily removed. But if you get lung cancer or esophogeal cancer, the kind most associated with smoking, it's only a matter of time. You will probably die from it.

I've done some amatuer research on it, and chewing actually has a fairly tenuous link to oral cancer. Studies of pro ball players (high percentage of smokeless tobacoo users), or people that live in states with higher-than-average rates of chewing among the population, don't seem to have any greater incidence of oral cancer.

That being said, it's not like it's chewing gum, it can cause problems, and probably contributes to oral cancer.
