LDN 1235, the Shark Dark Nebula, is a dark/reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus.

This was the most difficult deep sky object I ever tried to capture since starting astrophotography. I've tried this over several long imaging sessions with poor result. Last night I increased the sub exposure to 20 seconds and was finally able to eek out the nebula. This needs a lot more work but I was finally able to visualize the Shark!! This represents just over 4.5 hours of accumulated 20 second exposures.

No problem Ray. My photo was taken with a 3 second “night exposure”, the sky glow at the treeline was really not visible to the naked eye or in the binocular view, I’m not sure why it showed up so bright in the photo.

I get the same with my iPhone. In night mode I set the "ISO" such that it darkens the image

My is an iPhone 14 with the latest iOS, I don’t think I cave an “ISO” adjustment unless you’re referring to the “exposure” control.

Your iPhone has taken some fantastic night shots

    Thanks!

Yes, the exposure control is what I was referring to. Kinda works like the ISO on a typical camera..

Thanx for the comet shots! We’ve been swimming in an “atmospheric river” since the comet first arrived. I fear we’ll miss it altogether as we’ve nothing but rain in the foreseeable future…:(

Probably my last comet 2023 A3 T ATLAS images. Went out last night (10-20-2024) and got these. Taken on the approach to the Providence, RI airport results in some interesting plane trails (1st image). The 2nd image was planned for a few days in advance as I knew the moon would not rise until 8pm, which gave me just under an hour to try for the milky way/comet pairing... The skies along the ocean were a little hazy so it was difficult to get really clear images.

For those of you interested in astrophotography but not sure how to get started, I highly recommend Astrobackyard.com. Trevor Jones is an articulate and easy to understand guy and offers some good advice for all phases of the hobby--and his dog, Rudy, is often hanging out in the background. He has a youtube channel with a wealth of information.

I recently watched his 20 minute "how to" and thought I'd share it with you. He covers several different ways to get involved.

Hope this is helpful for you!
