Again, if your truck came with the immobilizer system, you have 2 black master keys, 1 grey valet key and a small plate with a code engraved in it.

That code is the code for your vehicle only and the one that the immobilizer reads from your keys.

If you loose all your black master keys and the code number in the small plate , you'll need to change the whole system and start from scratch at a heavy cost on your dime, not sure how much it would cost, but heard somewhere it's way over $2k to start your truck again and only a dealer can perform this system replacement

The only diference between the grey and black keys is that the grey key code can't be copied by anyone including the dealer.

Additional keys can be programed by a third party or the dealer by copying the code from the black keys or using the code in the small plate that came with the keys.

If you loose or get stolen the grey key, the code can't be reproduced but a cut key can be reproduced and gain access to the truck but won't be able to start the truck with a cut copy, of course if the thief has the grey key he can drive away in your truck if he can match the key to the truck.

the valet key is intended to be a safeguard against getting your code and key copied while in the possession of a valet and then steal your vehicle later when you least expect it.

You can make all the blank copies (no code) as you want or need so you can open the doors and put the truck in acc mode, but it won't start the motor without a chipped grey or black key.

    Hope this clarifies some questions

YES!...go to walmart and get a 'spare' cut from standard Toyota blank...about $2 more or less. It will open doors, but won't start the truck.

Pin the 'spare' in your trunks or whatever and lock the key and remote in the truck.

I do the same thing when I go hiking...the spare is so much smaller and no chance of getting the remote or chipped key wet.

No need to spend more for exotic solutions since if someone wants your truck (or in it) nothing will stop them short of parking it someplace different.

lol I put the key and fob in a plastic bag and bury it in the sand. To make sure I don't forget where I put it, the cooler goes on top. :D

RIP to my 08 Prerunner DC
When I got my truck the dealer gave me this little credit card key. It is just a little thicker than a credit card and fits perfect in my wallet. It can't start the truck just open the doors and turn on power.

But that still means if it flashes when not inserted in the ignition a thief would know the key is in or on the vehicle somewhere. Then he can search for it.

The system flashes no matter if the key is near or not, it just shows that the system is armed.

Used to put my spare key in the pocket built into my leash.

When I was little instead of a key it used to be quarters to call for a ride home.

Bring multiple girls, have them watch your keys in shifts. They refer to this as "tanning".
