Seinfeld says that at the beach you should hide your wallet in your shoe, because no one will ever think of looking there, especially if you push it all the way down to the toe.

Probably work for keys too :D

I'm an avid kayaker, and I keep mine hidden on the vehicle when I'm on the river. In my old manual tacoma with no fob, I kept a spare key in my PFD and just locked my keys in the truck. I definitely felt better about that system, but have had no issues just hiding it.

Problem with any tumbler lock is that people tend to open it and leave the combination on the lock...thief sees you open it walks up gets the combination and then comes back at a later time when you have stashed your key inside and presto he has your truck if your key is inside.

No, it needs to be pretty close to the door to work. I put my key in my gym bag all the time. If I try to open the door with my left hand, gym bag in right, it's too far and I have to swing the bag up by the door for it to open.

Because we haven't established whether the fob resists the intrusion of spermaceti.

    I got a sr5 for this reason. Didn't want a push start.
I got a spare made that only opens the doors/tailgate. I lock my fob key inside and keep the spare in my wetsuit.
Have a tonneau so I can lock my boards in bed since I always have a couple with me.
Should be able to use the valet key and lock the fob inside cab or in bed.

This, put it in pocket in wetsuit, go surf, come back, unlock and ready to go. Fob went into glove box, couldn't open with it in there, tested.

Depot key is an option. My wife's Rav4 has the lockout key and I got a $3 key made at HD just to open the doors in case she locks the keys in

Passwords should be private. Companies like Google and Apple assume they will be hacked so they don't keep copies of your passwords. When you encrypted data gets stolen from google or apple it's no big deal because no one but you has the password. Keep in mind, this is a very simplified explanation.

What the my car app was doing creating a root password that would give them access to anyone's account. On top of that, they wrote the password down and stored it within the app's code.

Im sure they have improved their security practices but I don't know how much. I would also ask, what are they doing with your data? With my time foil hat on I would wonder if they are sharing (cough cough selling) it to your insurance company. If I was selling insurance, I would sure as hell want to know if someone speeds or takes corners too fast to know if I should charge them more.

Their app has reasonable permissions. I'm happy to see that it doesn't have thing like "access to camera" or "contact list".

I spent a few minutes looking for a license agreement and couldn't find one anywhere. I would contact them before buying the stuff and ask for the license agreement. My guess is that their real business is selling your data.

I was considering one of these. Evidently the HitchSafe model is NOT SECURE.

Wow, this thread has gone on with lots of good ideas on how to get your trucks stolen. Just buy a cheap waterproof key holder, there's hundreds of them on Amazon. Take it with you and tuck it in to your wetsuit and problem solved.

I bought a small RF blocking sleeve for my FOB. I stick my key in the sleeve, then lock it in the glove box with the valet key. I attach the valet key to the key string in the pocket of my trucks. I don't trust any of the lock boxes. Plenty of those have been broken into in Hawaii.
