Any Tacoma timing chain issues I should worry about?

My '96 Tcoma 2.4 has low miles, but it IS 20 years old. I've heard Toyota's previous 22-R SOHC 2.4 pickup & rwd Celica engines had problems with the plastic timing-chain guides breaking. Is there anything similar I should worry about with my Tacoma's DOHC 2.4? Thanks in advance.

Nah you'll be okay, if you hear lots of slap and noise that's when you start worrying, but even that is relatively uncommon.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I wouldn't worry about it, the newer 4 cylinders corrected that issue. The 22-R's could be fixed with an aftermarket guide that wasn't that difficult to change. Once you did that, they'd go a million miles without a problem. Toyota 4 bangers are unbeatable, they aren't fast, but they last!

No slap or noise. But I do take it on a 400 mile trip every couple months or so. Just wondering if this engine has the same chain & guide setup and potential issues as the 22R. OTOH, my brother had an '83 Celica GT with the 22R and it ran flawlessly up to well over 200K, when the next owner totalled it.

Really glad to hear that. My truck has really low miles. But after 20 years, plastic chain guides age and get brittle. I did see one fail in a mid-80s Celica many years ago, and when I told a friend about my great 'new' Tacoma, the first thing he did was start nagging me about that old Toyota chain guide problem. I did find some stuff on YouTube about the 22R, but nothing about the chain and guides in the Tacoma twin-cam. Thanks.

The 2.4 and 2.7 don't have any timing chain guide issues. Use quality oil and change it regularly. I had a 22re and the guides went out around 100k. My 3rz has 230k miles. original timing chain and guides. No problems.

Excellent. It's kind of like learning (despite warnings to the contrary in my stupid Haynes manual) that my '96 Camry four is actually a non-interference engine. Anyway, with only 75K on the clock, this Tacoma might outlast me!
    Thanks.

the first gens go 500k miles and still don't need a new timing chain or guides so your good, no worries

the v6 have belts that say they need to be changed every 90-100k miles but people often ignore it or just don't know and drive on those 250 miles with the same belt

I like a straight-six, but never cared for the V6s
My brother has a '94 4-Runner with the 3.0 V6. He had the timing belt /waterpump job done at about 170K. Then the head gasket blew. Unfortunately the PO had them done previously, under Toyota's one-time-only recall. So my brother is stuck with it now. It's been parked in his garage now for 7 years. We keep the tires & battery up for when we need to move it.

the 3.0 is a dog anyway. he would be better to drop a 3.4 in there instead of bother with that slow underpowered 3.0, they were just sad whimpy little engines.

you can pick up a good running used one from a wrecked truck for around $800-$1000 and its back on the road ready to go

I always wished they'd have stroked the Supra engine to 4.0L or so and used it for trucks.

Apparently, the pre '96 4-Runner autoboxes were dogs too. On it's first long summer trip, with just my brother, myself, and luggage (far from heavily loaded) the tranny temperature warning light came on after about an hour. Complying with the owner's manual, we pulled off the interstate to let it cool off for about 30 minutes. Thereafter, about every half hour that stupid light would come on unless we kept the our cruising speed below about 65, or stopped using the AC. After that trip, my brother found a website dedicated to transplanting post '96 4-Runner automatics into the earlier models - not an easy bolt on as the site insisted the dipstick and other components would need to be changed, modified or moved.
Later, I installed an aux tranny cooler in the belly-pan below the radiator and that solved the highway warning light problem. But it still was a dog.

Nearly immaculate body & interior, except for some dust, & rust in the rear bumper. Dark blue. Alloy wheels. Tires were fairly new when parked.
Still starts & runs on 5 cylinders, tranny still goes forward and reverse to move out and back in the garage, in order to get in the attic.
    What's it worth?

If I could wave a magic wand, I'd even have the 2.7 four and autobox from a '98 4-Runner in this thing. Or even better - a 5-speed stick.

    Thanks.
Couldn't open the ad to compare.
Thing is - in PA, everything rusts.
A clean older truck / SUV body with a bad headgasket might be worth more up there.

    Strange.
    It's a clean running 4wd w/ 143K for 3000.

try finding a Tacoma truck for that price. laughs.
