Yeah for that much effort I'd just pitch it and buy one already set up for that.

Amen. I considered the crane but ultimately decided if I'm going to be lugging that much hardware around for that much cost, I'd get one on a trailer instead -- benefit there too is after the truck goes/trades in, I keep the same trailer. And I'm not drilling through the bed/frame.

Seems like a perfect use for a farm jack for a few seconds :p put those off-road show ponies to use!

Yeah as quoted above, I started thinking about it when I wanted to start collecting free firewood which isn't super light, and would be on my own doing it. MAYBE if I go through the whole process of setting up a wood stove, etc etc etc and using wood as a main fuel source, I'll consider doing it more, but as it is I just use the fireplace for "funsies" during the winter. If I do anything I'll probably land it on a utility trailer so I can pull 5k lbs of wood at a time :p

Exactly. I think that's a good example. Looks like it has pins to adjust the legs, once dropping 700 pounds in the bed it might be difficult to pull the pins. Maybe something adapted, like screw jacks for scaffolding.

I don't know, that is how they sell trailer hitch cranes and I've never used them so I'll drop out now....:hattip:

If you used this crane setup with airbags you could just dump all the air out of the bags and then when you get the load in the bed put air to the bags, raising the back, and now you have the legs off the ground and away you go.

You bet, it's an old truck driver trick.

Boat jack stands have long threaded bolts and big wing nuts like that. I have a few of those that I can adapt.
