Oh yeah those trucks are SUPER low to the ground - the PreRunner has 4x4 suspension which is why it's easier to jack it up.

@Dallandser: yup, driveshaft is disconnected. Tried how you suggested, there just isn't quite enough room (but it comes close enough to tease me!). Thank you.

@BartMaster1234: they sure are low to the ground, definitely! Well, factory stock Tacos, anyways, which came with (?) 15" wheels. Just about the only 'mod' or non-stock item on mine is the 'custom' 17" wheels-which make a much bigger difference than some might think.

Put some blocks of wood on top of your floor jack, get some big jackstands from Harbor Freight and get it up a little higher - you think it's going to tip over or something?

Getting it high enough isn't the problem. It's the need for another 4" or so for the tranny to clear the engine.

fsm says pull engine and tranny together as a unit then separate when out of vehicle. I've read a number of write-ups by guys who've 'dropped' the tranny; unfortunately it seems none of them had a 2wd 4cyl auto.

If the transmission is stuck then I'd probably try to use that to my advantage and try to make a surface to press the seal in. You could probably make something out of plywood and place it over the bell housing and ratchet strap the transmission in place or towards the engine to press in the seal. Where there's a will...

er, well, I could......but I'd have to raid the "big boys' gangbox" for some new toys
like a sawzall, or a grinder w/cut-off wheel or, (yes!) , a torch!

actually, I'm kickin' around a possible new project: chop that puppy up and make some mods so that I CAN unbolt it......

@Dallandser: excellent thought. Too bad I'm past that point now. Way too much left to do and under serious time pressure now, truck MUST be back on the road Wednesday. Ugh. But the unfinished rms, well, that'll just add some impetus to the 'possible project' I mentioned in the last post before this one.

You'll still have to do some modifications unless they happened to make your x member really wide. The prerunner / 4x4 crossmember fits in a wider channel welded to the frame. Fabbing something similar with your existing x member seems like it would be the way to do this. The welding would be a lot more friendly because you'd be welding to the crossmember and not the frame so you wouldn't have to have everything held in place on to meet the frame in the right position.
