I taped mine with 2 pieces of painters tape. One at the full dot and one at the low mark. Basically masking the dipstick so that the oil level normal operating range of the metal is exposed. Then I took some 2000 grit and sanded that part of the dipstick. In simple terms, I gave the area of the dipstick where the oil should be in a matte finish with the rest staying the factory sorta shiny metal. It’s a lot easier to see a reading on that matte finish than the shiny part now so as long as it’s in the higher part of that area I know I’m good.

Can color the tip with a paint marker like the ones used for marking pistons and cylinder heads.

Even with fresh oil, it's not that hard to read. The real trick is to pull the dipstick, wipe it down, then reinsert. When you pull it out again, you should fairly easily be able to see the difference in surface reflection between the dipstick and the oil. I just put in 6 qts. 6 oz. and call it a day and read it a few times a year. Way easier than checking the oil cooled 911 (14 qts.) where you have to drive it until it's at full operating temperature, park it on a level surface and then, without turning the engine off, open up the rear deck, pull out the dipstick, wipe it down, re-insert and then read it. And when you're changing the oil on that, you have to drain both the engine and the external oil reservoir, and all that oil comes gushing out all at once and if your oil drain pan isn't fast enough, it'll overflow and coat your entire garage floor. Then, you replace the drain plugs with new crush washers, screw on a new Mahle filter, add 9-10 quarts, then go out and drive it until it's hot and go through the aforementioned checking routine, adding just enough to bring you up to the top fill line. And even though there's 14 quarts in there, you can never get more than 11 out during an oil change. The Taco is so easy by comparison.

To me, it's less of a "I can't see the color" issue and way more of a "it looks like a mountain scene that starts halfway between the two dots and ends up near the yellow handle" issue.

Drive your truck. Pull the dipstick up a ways and let it sit for 5 minutes. Pull the dipstick and clean and then check the level. You will have one shot to get a great read lol

Fine, I'll have this bald man over sometime to bless my truck.
Why are people acting like it is impossible, or somehow beneath us, to work on our trucks? Grampa was a mechanic, Dad worked in his shop (as a child slave, most likely) and I grew up doing all the "easy" maintenance on my rides.
I've replaced starters, water pumps, alternators, all fluids, patched tires, pulled dents, cleaned throttle bodies, replaced all filters, replaced headlights, bled brakes, fixed fuel tank leaks, torn dashes apart to replace heater cores, bled cooling systems, cleaned/gapped plugs, criticized my betters, fixed vacuum leaks, greased wheel bearings, replaced pinion seals, rotated tires, diagnosed shorts...
Tons of people on this board have done WAY more than that.

I did not act like it was beneath anyone - I've spent a ton of time doing my own maintenance, to include engine replacements in several OEMs, engine rebuilds, shocks, clutches, rear end rebuilds, LOF etc. I've also managed large shops with 20+ mechanics in it on 3 shifts. I've even overseen repairs for large fleets whose vehicle count is excess of 14,000 and budgets in excess of 8 figures a month.

I'm well versed with all sides of the coin I assure you.

My quote was that it had to be a joke because I do not see how anyone could do what the thread referenced claimed. I made a joke and pointed out some irony in the "dealers all suck, those techs don't know squat which is why I do my own maintenance" posts that are prevalent here and then we also see the "I drained my transmission, added oil to the radiator and now the truck makes weird noises" threads. I used a touch of hyperbole - I'm sorry.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
This is your solution. You have to allow air into the top of the dipstick tube so that the oil drains down. It'll drain faster if it's warm. If it were me, I'd pull the dipstick out, wait the 5 minutes or more, clean off the dipstick, reinsert and check the level.
Scuffing up the surface of the dipstick between the marks makes it a bit easier to get a good read.

Drain the oil and put in 5 qts w/filter; (4.0L) let it sit overnight in a reasonably level spot. Pull the dipstick and take a reading before you go on your way in the morning. If you're paranoid, wipe it off and check it again. Adjust oil level as required from a new (quart) bottle, but limit it to a couple of ounces at a time. Repeat above. Once it's at the dot, you're done. If you're STILL worried, repeat in a couple of days. I know this method works because my truck doesn't burn oil and it stays at the same spot ("full dot") on the stick for the entire 5,000 miles to the next change every time I check it.

Note: When I have been foolish enough to check it when I stop to get gas on a drive to the middle of nowhere in Maine to fish and hunt, it's almost always a wacky reading: overfilled, a qt low, no oil showing on the dipstick at all (WT!!!???.) Ya. My advice: Maybe don't check it when you're stopped to get gas, or especially during a lunch break on the side of some wilderness road, where the Canada BlueJays land on your shoulder or head begging for food, and it's obvious no one has passed this way for at least a week. (and the last place that sold oil for $8.99/qt in a brand you never heard of is at least 50 miles away: It will ruin your whole day. ;)

Even though I’ve done the sand the dipstick mod to be able to see it, 99% of the time this is what I do on an oil change.

When I drain the truck (it’s level in the air, because I jack the front and back to do the rotation) I pull the plug and let it drain while I swap out the filter and rotate the tires. Then I replace the plug and dump in 6 qts. Just about every time after I let it idle a min or two and I shut down, it’s about 3/4 up the range on the dipstick and I leave it at that. Every time I check it in between, it’s again at the 3/4 mark.

6qts will do you just fine for an oil change, my IS350 with the same 2GR under the hood I follow the same procedure and get the same result. The book on both says 6.3 I think it is but that must be the absolute full mark which isn’t really necessary. It runs just fine on 6………plus conveniently, cases of Mobil 1 come in 6 packs and Costco has it $10 off about every other month:woot:

    That's what I do too.

I am more concerned that it does not leak than the reading on the dip stick.

i park facing north and uphill at least 3% grade, while the moon is aligned with jupiter, and pull the dipstick with my left arm while covering the fill cap with my right hand so it can't see what i'm doing.

    works every time.

I have a new 2022 Tacoma, my first Toyota by the way. I been driving and taking care of my own cars/trucks for 50 years. It’s sad that I had to read about trying to read the @#$&*@#$ dipstick on a new $45,000 truck. Pull the stick, wait 5 minutes, scuff up the stick, check after it’s warm etc. How pathetic is this design. Every car or truck I’ve owned you would pull the stick, wipe it off, stick it back in and then read it and know exactly how much oil is in the engine but apparently that is too damn simple. I’m OCD about my cars and take excellent care of them and this is what is have to deal with on a brand new truck !!!! I hope this is not a sign of things to come with this Tacoma. Thanks for letting me vent.

Just pull the out the dip stick first thing in the morning after it has sat all night. Works every time with my truck as long as it is sitting on a fairly level spot. The oil should be approx. on the top dimple. I replace it and go on my way: I seldom wipe it clean and take another measurement. I change my own oil and approx 5.5 qts puts it right at that top dot. When I have occasionally checked it after stopping to put gas in the tank, it is within a millimeter or so of this mark. My 120k V6 uses no oil between changes.

    Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the advice, that is what I was going to try. Check it after setting all night and just pull it out and read it. I did scuff up the dipstick with machinist lion’s tongue. It has a V6 and the manual says it holds 6.2 qts. Going to change it at 5000, even though the dealer will change it at 10,000. I bought Toyota oil and filter for now since it is under warranty. I was going to put 6 qts in it and run it and then check after it sits for several hours like you said. But maybe I’ll try 5.5 qts in it first. I’m grateful for the input.
My last new vehicle was a 2002 Yukon, geez this Tacoma is a computer on 4 wheels. I’ve turned a bunch of crap OFF !!!!! Lol
