Any tricks for making shell door only open part way

    You could take a bungee cord and run it from one of the handles down to the tailgate or hitch, that's what we do on my dad's F-350 when camping in the bed if we want the window open.

    Just change the struts to shorter ones if you don't want them to open as far.

    I used some 550 cord and tied some loops along it at desired openness lengths then use a snap clip to attach the cord to a D-ring on my bed rails to allow it open some for camping ventilation but not all the way.

    I did what @Key-Rei did on the Leer topper on my Dodge Ram 2500. I'm 6'-2" but with the hatch all the way open I had to get on the tailgate to close it and as you mention it punches holes in the tarp. I just tied the 550 cord to the top and bottom of the strut then tied a loop around the shaft as a stop. Took a couple tries to get the lengths even but no fuss no muss been working for 18 years.
