Can't tell you what to do without knowing where you hunt. I can tell you to make sure your spread is realistic for your area. Is it common to see 18+ ducks feeding together where you are? If so, cool, throw out a bunch of decoys. For me, 3-6 decoys is usually more effective because, well, if a duck saw 2 doz decoys sitting in a slough in middle TN he would most certainly know that is bullshit. Ha ha.

so ask around how many feed together? and then simulate it? also how do yall retrieve your kills with no dog, just walk out with waders? I can also redneck a treble hook on a fishing pole and hook them if the water is too deep...

Ask around or just go scout around ponds or swamps in your area and just notice what you see. As for retrieving ducks Ill either walk out or kayak to them if I'm not in my boat. The treble hook idea would probably work though. I try to hunt in places I can walk and if I don't think that'll work I bring the yak.

Also don't be "that guy". Read read and re read local waterfowl laws/regulations for the areas you'll be hunting. We have pretty strict rules around here and its really discouraging when people just jump into the sport without proper knowledge, Not saying you are the person but I have seen it a lot! Gotta keep the heritage strong

Ducks themselves, but if they aren't there when you look it could be a roosting area or a feeding area so low for feathers, vegetation in the water, duck boxes, or feet marks on the bank. Takes a while a good scouting will always pay off but it takes a lot of time and sometimes multiple seasons.

Exactly! I have "The Dog". It's a big ass fishing pole with a huge float plus two giant treble hooks.

Go out and scout. See where and what the ducks do.

For your spread try and set them up in a way that funnels them into your spot where you are sitting. A lot of people make the mistake of just throwing them out and they will tend to land just outside the spread or to the sides.. you can mix the woodies with the mallards but if you are hunting on a bank that has tree overhead or grass and cat tails, put them there and the mallards in more open area. I've seen people throw there wood ducks out into open water and it just doesn't work like that around here. There are a lot of books and articles out there! Ive never heard of anywhere limiting how many shells you can carry on you lol Ive only heard of having to have your plug in which usually limits you to 3 shells in the gun. I usually carry at least 2-3 boxes with me if Im hunting with others.

Yup. I can only guess it's an attempt to prevent people from sky busting everything that flies over.

Snow goose population @ Sacramento, CA Refuge as of last Wednesday, Dec.7.
This was just one pond, several more ponds with similar numbers. Lots of racket when they leave to feed.
