Progress pics, install tomorrow. We are basically retrofitting a lazy susan with two drawers where a wine fridge was.

Nice work you've done there. I was a cabinet maker for quite a few years before I became a medic. I don't miss commercial work one bit though. :D I don't miss doing solid surfacing either. Installing was fun though. My first job when I became a cabinet maker was building a lazy susan corner cabinet out of wood. They gave me the center support bar, a set of blueprints and told me to go at it. lol I built custom windows and doors along with cabinets. Now I just build stuff for myself. It's nice not dealing with homeowners anymore and listening to them trying to low ball you.

I had one lady try to low ball me on a formica counter top in the kitchen and bathroom. She was the last straw. I haven't done any more formica work for anyone else since then. It was nice telling her to call a shop and let them do it.
She called me back after she found out it was $9 a square foot for them to do it and I was going to charge her $7 and fix her cabinet that someone didn't bother to put an end on.

All I had ever worked on was multi million dollar homes and big companies such as Aflac's headquarters. I always enjoyed doing woodwork. Now I have to build a new shop cause I've outgrown my current one. It doesn't help having welding as a hobby too with the tools for that along with a full woodworking shop.

Thank you, they were done with a router and a leigh dovetail jig. This next piece i did with a machine tonight, its called a carvewright, kinda a DIYers CNC machine...

Anyone have any pointers on distressing wood? I am doing a sign as a gift, it was my girlfriends idea and she wants a "rustic" look. I don't want to use any paint, but i plan on using stain, maybe more than one color and i am not to fond of the vinegar an steel wool look. If anyone has any good techniques i would appreciate the input. I went with 8/4 vertical grain pine.

Distressed like it's been outside for ten years? Or the fake distressed? That would be paint but you said no to that. Distressed can be many things. Drop it 50 times from 6' to make it seem as though it's fell of the wall a lot! I think it looks good the way it is.

Find a farmer with a "hot" manure pile and bury it for a few weeks. Not kidding. the ammonia and the heat ages the wood very quickly.

I'll contribute. My work doesn't measure up at all but I am proud. My grandfather was a wood worker and I was biten buy the bug at a young age.

I have built a book shelf, a toy/book shelf, a wooden name board for my oldest son Cobryn and a couple sets of shelves for my sons rooms but I can't find any pics of the shelves or the name board.

This is a book/toy shelve. All routered/rounded edges so we get bumps and not cuts incase of falls! The little man is Corbyn, my oldest son.

    Toy Case 1.jpg

    Here it is finished.

    Toy case 2.jpg

Here is the book shelf I made. I drew out the outer dimensions and then just went crazy with how long and where the shelves would be. Turned out great! It's made of 2x8 frame and 1x8 shelving.

    Book Case 1.jpg

And here it is painted. No recent pics. All of these are atleast a couple of years old.

I plan on beating it up a little bit. I will do some fake cracks on the ends with a scoop chisel, some fake worm holes, maybe whack it with a chain a few times lol.

Anyone have experience with wood-strip canoes/kayaks? I've had the plans for a canoe laying around for a couple years, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've had the same thing for years. Never really had a big enough spot to build one yet. I hope to build a new shop soon though and change that.

I have read about people distressing wood with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and India ink. Just experiment with how much ink you add to the alcohol to get that "greyed" look. The alcohol evaporates and leaves the ink after brushing it on.

    Ah, yeah...Most likely not.
Well, you can put it in a 5 gallon bucket with a couple cups of ammonia, throw a trash bag over the top, seal it in place with tape, and set it in the sun for a day. The fumes should at least age it a bit. It won't look 100 years old, but it won't look new either.

Fun website from a guy who built one. He includes some pointers/tips, but mostly it's lots and lots of pictures.
I'm in the same boat (haha) where I have plans for a canoe in a drawer in my workshop, but have never had the time, space, and money to build one all at the same time.
