how are you planing the endgrain?

 

Right now I use a belt sander, which if anyone is thinking about buying one don't go cheap. But when I build my new shop I want to have a drum sander to do it. A planer will tear out the grain

 

you must be talking a big industrial stationary sander?

Trying to decide on a handle for this box

 

Mostly Mohak that's what coin it as. Its cheaper than Teak. Its funny to me when a bad supplier sneaks some Spanish Cedar in a load of lumber. You can smell it. Grains a little off.

Spanish cedar definitely has a cedar smell to it. Could smell it a long way away.

 

That's too purty for a handle. What about routing a 1/4 round about 3" on the box under where the stick is.

 

or on the sides might work also.

 

On the sides might be awkward for a hinged box

 

maybe but it shouldnt be a heavy draw hinge so you could open in easily.

I've heard that you can plane the end grain if you just take off something like 1/64" per pass. Haven't tried it yet, but if you do, let me know how it goes! I have the same planer as you.

...^^^... My grandfather built a boat (about the same size) ... he even made the tie down cleats and etc.

It took him about 15 years to build the boat and trailer ... and I skied off of it when it was finished and I was in HS.

BTW ... your boat looks fantastic ...

I grew up with my grandparents and I watched him build and do things and I learned a lot.

He was a country dentist and had a dental lab and he was good at detail work.
