Bosch had their chance to license SawStop technology. They didn't. Instead they infringed on their patents. Can you say Karma?

SawStop is known for being the most litagous company. If they actually cared about people's safety they wouldn't sue everyone and stop progress.

A quick look at their website makes me think this is using a different approach than sawstop.
They tried to license the tech before making their own saws and got zero interest. They cared enough about safety to invest in making saws when they were told no one would buy a more expensive saw. Not only did they make saws. They made some really great saws...

Probably wanted a bunch of money for his system. I'll admit I don't know about this. But I do know that Gass (SawStop founder) has been trying to force every tablesaw to have a safety device. His company has a patent for it, and is known for being a patent troll to stop competitors. Does this sound like someone who cares about safety? I don't mind that they're like that but they shouldn't try to act like they're only focused on safety.

    Fair points.

One good thing about it all is that the patents start expiring in 2021.

It is what it is. I don't think I'll ever own one because it breeds complacency but they have their purpose.

I’ve had my Bosch 4000 for years and years now. Been moved 4 times and keeps going good. It’s no cabinet saw but serves my needs well. Saw stop are great saws but the price point can be hefty, and agree they do breed complacency on some level.

I don't necessarily agree with the complacency comments that people are making. Has anyone here actually, personally, SEEN someone become complacent after using a Sawstop? I can't speak for anyone else, but I certainly haven't become complacent. I suppose there could be some out there, but it's a far stretch to say that this would alter someone's behaviors. When I use my saw I don't feel protected from being lazy or stupid. I feel protected from that nasty freak accident when something binds or jumps (yes, I take every precaution against those kinds of things too). I feel protected from an inevitable distraction or slip. Basically, I feel protected from the unknown.
Also, anyone who is complacent with these things must have several hundred bucks lying around and time to kill. If you set one of these off, you have to replace the brake cartridge and blade.

That's your opinion, as what I said was mine. I am by no means the only person who thinks. I'm not saying that you shouldn't be allowed to buy a saw with a brake, but don't force every saw to have one. I cannot think of a time where I have injured myself with tools where I was doing everything correct and in a proper manner. Accidents happen because the user either doesn't have proper understanding or is using the tool in the incorrect manner.

So he should give his technology away for free?(that he spent a lot of money developing) If the guy didn't care about safety, why would he invent this product? He got a patent for his work and is entitled to defend it in court. He has done nothing illegal, and his technology has prevented countless serious injuries.

I didn't say what he did was illegal but if you really don't want people to be hurt you wouldn't patent the technology (look up Jonas Salk). He wanted to profit as much as possible which is great this is America and he's entitled to do that. But don't push legislation that says all saws should be forced to have a brake system when you're the only company that can make them. Look up monopolies and anti-trust laws, they're there for a reason. I'm not going to keep discussing this because it sounds like you have SawStop and are unwilling to discuss negative opinions of the company.

Note I said on some level and that was only a small part of my statement. I also said they are indeed great saws. I simply feel anything with lots of extensive safety features and sensors has the potential to breed at least a little complacency. Ever notice how you handle things when you wear cut resistant gloves vs not wearing them? I’m not saying you start juggling knifes but it is human nature to become a little more careless at least. I was in no way bashing saw stop or saying people like to lick the blade like it’s a 9v battery. Just joining the conversation.

    Is this better?

I agree that the BOSCH Reaxx is a great saw but has a hefty price tags and the potential to breed complacency for some people.

I agree BUT not many people besides Phil Thien have freely given their technology or studies away on the free market. It would be nice but not really common in human societies.

Jonas Salk is a prime example of someone who truly wanted people to be safe regardless of a loss of profit. There are examples of this, and Salk could have made much more than SawStop could ever hope to make.

I was trying to keep it within the woodworking industry. Phil Thien was a pioneer in dust collection and reducing exposure to fine particles. However I’m lazy and bought a super dust deputy.

This whole Sawstops breed complacency argument is stupid . I don't own a Sawstop but would never alter how I approach using a tablesaw because I had one .

I compare it to driving a car with airbags. Did your driving habits change because you now have airbags to protect you?
