theres a lot of youtube videos on how to balance them for better operation. A neighbor had a Rigid brand one and he got it running good but said it burned up a motor or something, and tossed it! I didnt get the full story so it might have been more than just a burned motor..

The neighbor was having an ash tree taken down this morning. Wife said maybe they will give you the wood. I was looking for some wood for my wood splitting exercise program, So I went over and talked to them and offered to take anything over 8 inches in diameter. They said ok.

Next thing you know I have a big ass piece of wood. Now I am thinking firewood, table, firewood, table.....

Any one made a table from a slice of ash? Does it check too much as it dries?

I would plan to cut it 2 or 3 inches thick with a chain saw and then have at it with my planes. First rough it out with my power planner and then in keeping with my exercise program put on some 60's music and make it flat with my hand planes. For some reason I find working up a sweat with a hand plane soothing

I would think it needs to be kiln dried, or it will prob "check".

Seal the end grain with a wax base paint, couple of coats. Let that sit in a dry, temperature stable environment for a while and you will be gtg

    This.
Could also just melt down some paraffin blocks and paint that on the ends. The air drying rule of thumb is 1 year per inch of thickness. It won't prevent checks completely, but proper drying can significantly limit checking and splitting.

You can also use pentacryl to help stabilize the wood.

I've done the exact thing you plan on doing with a slab of walnut. The only difference is my log wasn't as fresh as yours. It had been cut at least a year before I cut the slab off with chainsaw. The walnut was green in the middle still.

You can see a little bit of haze in the finish but it has cleared up since. Some it is the camera angle also.

Typically air dry is 1yr per 1" thickness as a rule of thumb. Check what your local moisture content is given your climate and humidity. For instance my area in Texas is around 11-13% project pending

Finally got around to doing some more on the hanging cabinet. The nicer hand tools will go in it to avoid getting the blades dinged or tools damaged.

I bought this mid century modern desk. It survived 50+ years without any significant damage, however 20 minutes after being in my possession I put a long scratch down the side when unloading it from my truck. You can see it in the first pic, left side middle towards the back. Can't believe how stupid I am.

Anyway, I believe it's walnut veneer and may have gouged through it, but maybe not. Looking at it close up I think I can see the wood grain lines continue through the gouge.

Either way, anyone have suggestions on the best way to make a small repair without redoing the whole side? The desk, and this side, will be in a very visible place and I'd rather not see the scratch.

Moved one of my stashes today . This is a bunch of full 2" thick , fine grain VG Fir 2x4 , 2x6 , 2x8 and a bit of 2x10 I bought it on spec and stored at a shed on my inlaw's property over 10 years ago .

Moved it to my 8x20 storage container at my shop build site

    Pile at the shed

    Load 1

    Losd 2

There was a 3rd load of long pieces I put up on the cap rack but forgot to take a pic

It all fit under the rack I built in my container . There is more material going in here and I wanted to keep things seperated
