Looks dented a bit, id steam the big spot closest to the front a little at a time with a damp towel and iron. Just not alot since its veneer. Let it dry and rub some
Old english oil. Theres a light and dark old english. Try light colored one first in a little piece of the scratch. See how it looks. Id be cautious of doing the whole scratch in case it doest look right. Id start with the old english towards the back...not much else id try without messing it up.

Theres also wood color wax sticks that you can rub into scratches.

I remember the damp towel/iron trick from high school woodshop. Hadn't thought about that in decades until you mentioned it. May give it a shot, cautiously. Agreed on starting light and working towards darker as needed - had that same conversation with my GF after it happened. Thanks!

    This!
Just to add a couple of pointers though...
Check the edges to find out if it really is veneer. They look too sharp to be able to wrap a veneer, so if it is veneer, the grain pattern shouldn't continue. If it's not veneer, you should be able to see how the grain continues around the corner.
As Wilcam47 said, you need to be very careful in steaming it if it is veneer. Too much and it could delaminate, depending on what kind of adhesive was used.
I would also lightly sand the area right around the gouge before and after steaming for a couple reasons:
    1. When you steam it, it could affect the finish that's currently on it. So you'd sand a little before to minimize that issue, and a little after to remove any finish that gets messed up.
    2. You have room to feather in the new finish. You may have to play with some stain to get close to the same color, but it would be very difficult to match exactly.

Just my two cents. Good luck!

That's definitely veneer. You can try those fill sticks or replacing it with a patch.

Turned a couple more duck calls this weekend. One in cedar the other in cherry. Was worried the cedar wouldn't hold together for turning but it actually came out nice.

Nice. How are making those dark lines? Are they painted or burned?

The thin lines are first turned in with a fine tip then I burn the line with a braided copper wire while turning at high speed. On the cherry one the thick lines that fade in are burned in using 600 grit sandpaper, high speed and pressure.

A friend showed me the copper wire trick. I stumbled into the sandpaper one on my own by not paying attention one time. LOL

No, but I do pens, handles, and want to do salt and pepper mills.

I have a good friend that does pens. I've done a few on his set up and like doing them but not enough to get all the setup, just enough to go use his. LOL Considered giving salt and pepper mills a try as well.

    Those are aggressive teeth!

    interesting!
salt and pepper mills are cool/neat to make. Hard thing for me to find is 3"x3" turning blocks. But I have found some reasonable priced. still pushes the cost of just making one to minimum of $20...

I cut my own blocks for turning. I have another friend with a mill and he keeps me supplied with scraps that his customers have no use for but that are great for small turning projects. A few minutes with the table saw and drill press and I'm turning.
