I have a friend who has a friend who knows.......

Anyways, you get the idea, but I was speaking to a friend about the show Maine Cabin Masters. She was providing some insight into how things are done. On that show, the "TV Network" pays the people doing the work on the show for their labor. If you haven't seen the show, they always ask in the beginning how much the client has to spend. The amount is typically in the $20K-$50K range and that money goes to materials. I have no idea how much the people doing the work are actually paid or how that works. I am sure it is not the same arrangement for every show also. That leaves a lot of blanks to be filled in. Sorry I can't provide any additional insight. Maybe the web has some info.

That’s how most are. Some pay everything. Pretty sure Holmes is one of those that takes on the ones deemed desperate enough and pays it all.

I figured it was some mix of the 2. It seems to me that Holmes is a pretty good guy, but some of the renos run up to $300k+CAD and I have a hard time seeing him swallow that bill.

By him, I mean him and/or the network. I’m not 100% sure that’s how it goes do him specifically. Those shoes make a ton of $ off sponsors like Home Depot, Lowe’s, Dewalt, Milwaukee, or Festool.. just to name a few.

    Wikipedia has the answers....(maybe)

The series originally aired on Home & Garden Television in Canada, and also on several other Alliance Atlantis networks in Canada (including BBC Canada and Slice), as well as in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and on HGTV in the United States.[1] It had previously aired in the US on Discovery Home until that channel was rebranded Planet Green on June 4, 2008. It was once the highest-rated show on the Canadian HGTV (HGTV having once claimed that an episode had received its highest-ever ratings), with shows airing upwards of 20 times a week at the peak of its popularity. It has won the Gemini viewers' choice award, a testament to the popularity of the show in Canada.

Because the show is a television series, costs for the homeowners, who are likely to be strapped for cash due to the previous contractors' mistakes and/or frauds, are kept to a minimum (10% to 20% of the cost of repair). Some contractors hired on the show have even donated time, materials, and labor to help homeowners in need. The remainder of the work is funded by the TV production company, but in some cases, Mike Holmes personally contributes funds towards the repairs.[3]

Nothing I’ve done today but my walnut and maple came in. Not lucky enough to find it on the side of the road like you east coasters! :pout:

Or backyard. White oak in my yard. Many straight as an arrow for about 40 feet or so and a diameter of 4-6 feet. Anyone have a portable saw mill? One tree for you, one for me?

Maybe I’ll bring an extra suit case the next time we visit the father in law in Maine. Lobster cooler for the wife, wood case for me.

The true challenge would be getting the tree on the ground without taking out power lines, the house or the landscaping. It would either take an artist with a chainsaw or a big ass crane.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Try https://www.kencraftcompany.com/ out. Very reasonably priced. Their shipping times can be hit or miss depending on what you order but I've never been let down. I've often gotten wider wood than I ordered as well as extra wood just to make the package more uniform. If you have the ability to re-saw, I have found that it is more cost effective to just order the thicker stock.

This is who I used. Didn’t seem too bad and I will say, all the boards were damn near perfect.

I'll have to try them out. They have a nice selection. Love that canary wood also.

Bought a special piece of sapele for the bed I'm building. It'll be the cross bar for the headboard. It came in the other day and I threw some alcohol on it to check out the figure. Wow!
