Well as you can see by my second picture, it doesn't have to end when the water gets hard!

Smallies (or largies for that matter) only have red eyes when spawning.

Oh, yes I see what you mean. Yes, they are kinda orange-ish, but in the spawn they are blood red, I thought that is what you meant for red eyes:

White oak. looks like the blade might be a little dull, but the ripping blade is the way to go.

My lathe tools arent near as sharp as they should be. If its ripping out then its dull, most likely or you are putting too much pressure on the tool to the spinning object. Or combo of both...

I go about 850 rough cut for shaping, then sanding I speed it up. For super smooth I go really high speed just have to watch so you dont burn the material. If you are doing acrylics you need to have them warm otherwise they chip/crack easy in the cold. Like I said my tools arent super sharp but they will cut out ok. Id say prob 80-90 degrees on the cutting tip to item you are turning. Lots depends on the type of wood. Sometimes you have to angle under so it doesnt snap out big chunks of wood. The denser woods are the ones that string out a big line of shavings. Cocobolo seems to do that quite a bit, its seems waxy wood.
