Threw some scrap wood and metal together to make a frame. Skateboard bearings on the frame spin. For a friend in a skate band. He wanted to display some album art and challenged me to come up with something different. He was super stoked.IMG_20160809_160054.jpg IMG_20160809_160121.jpg IMG_20160809_160130.jpg IMG_20160809_160140.jpg IMG_20160809_160147.jpg
I usually paint houses so this let me be a little creative.

...wrapping up another birthday gift, ...first time making this, ...i based it off a design i saw over at garage woodworks, the "modern coat rack"... ( http://www.garagewoodworks.com/garage_blog/2016/05/21/a-modern-coat-rack/ ) here's my implementation... i wanted it to be colorful because it's going into a kid's playhouse... other adaptations on the original design are the finger pull recesses and the magnetic "latches"...

i used minwax wipe-on poly, ....i've found it to be a surprisingly good-looking finish, especially on figured maple... ...and it's very easy to apply...

You said colorful, and the wood looks to nice for paint. I am glad you are going that direction.:hattip:

yep, ...i like oil-based finishes (wiping varnish, oil/varnish blend), ...i'd rather try to enhance grain/figure rather than mask w/ say a stain... i'm not averse to paint, ..the wall paneling project for my home i'm currently working on is getting painted w/ white latex paint (which i think looks good), and so i'm using all poplar (tight grained, paints well) ...as for small projects like this coat rack, i wouldn't mind my hand at milk paint...

Do you run the wood through a planer or just use it as is? I see pallets all the time waiting for the trashman and think about salvaging the wood.

@Madjik_Man you should appreciate his work

Hello, never used a planer. Usually just sand it with an orbital. I get all of my pallets from the warehouse thats connected to my office. They let me take whatever I want and I find some really nice wood alot of the time. They are fun to create stuff with and best of all. FREE! hehe.
