oh also you may find from time to time you will have a void or a knot that needs filled. If I find it when Im turning I keep some of the saw dust from the piece Im working on and fill in with sawdust and super glue. it sands down nice. the mills above had a knot hole that was open and I filled it with the saw dust and it matched nicely. Just be aware the wood/sawdust and superglue will fume off and it does get a little warm so keep an eye on it. Ive never had it catch fire but it gets pretty hot. So dont be surprised.

Not at all. Others of us struggle with IDing as well and could benefit from the info.

there probably is spalted oak. Basically the spalted or dark streaks is mold. its usually down towards the trunk of the tree.

Spalted stuff is going to smell like moldy wood and can be an irritant

If you willing to cut them in half long ways it would make it easier to ID

id say white oak then...if you look at the grains right below the brownish red color, there some grains in there that look like oak.

Im back to red oak;) Im sure its not maple. Keep some saw dust and pack it in there and some cryocyanic/ca (sp?) super glue when you go to sand it, it will come out nice.

you are going to need a forsner bit with extension. The salt and pepper mills are the ones I use is the wood river is the kits from woodcraft.

theres 2 sizes for the wood river kits. One for the bottom and one for the hole all the way through. You do need an extension though since its harder to find the length needed. I drill half way through one side then flip it over and drill through the other. it doesnt track exactly straight so you have to do it that way otherwise it will be way off if you go from one side only. If you have a three jaw chuck and drill chuck you can do it on the lathe but I dont have the three jaw chuck yet so I use my drill press...

Man, make sure you use a respirator when messing with spalted wood. You can get a bad sinus infection or lung problems.

Looks like white oak to me. The live oak in my area has more grey in it. I think it depends on the soil composition too. Live oak is hard and dulls the gouges quickly if it's dried. Turning it wet isn't too bad , but you get soaking wet. Like water spitting out of it. Definitely need to clean tools, chisels, & lathe after use.

That looks similar to the white oak in my area. Live oak looks nothing like that in my area. It's bumpy with ridges. Bark comes off easy compared to white oak.
