If he reads the responses, I’m sure he’ll answer one of us lol.

The tea adds more tannins (natural in wood to some extent) and when the vinegar mixture reacts, it’s oxidizes. You can get a little aging with just the mixture, but the tea usually gives a more defined old gray/barn wood look to it. My 8 year old niece thought it was pretty cool to paint with tea and a clear liquid and see the change. Can’t remember what she helped me make now though.

I use pine a lot, because I’m cheap (and the type of stuff I make), it works really well on that.

I also used it in my wood shop for the “trim,” which was just cheap furring strips used to hide seems and what not.

My OCD needs a clean look, or I won’t use my shop.

It’s good for most of what I make. Also, it was these that I made with my niece.

I know the feeling. Usually you can tell on the shipping estimate. If it's a week and a half to 3 weeks out... It's coming from China.

I don't either. Check this place out.

    https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/

They're in Brooklyn and usually have some nice stuff. It's the only place I can find Ashley Iles tools.

I probably made that iron buff about 6 or 7 years ago, so any bits of iron that weren't strained out probably made it even stronger. I've heard about people putting some black tea on the wood before applying the buff. Never tried that though. Would probably work well with oak, not sure I'd need it with this butternut.
I'm making a wand rack for my wife. Like my niece, she is also a big Harry Potter fan and has collected a few wands. So i figured I'd give her a way to display them. The base and the 'arms' are the ebonizes butternut, and the main body is figured redwood. I'm going to fill the pores of the butternut with gold gilt cream to make it pop and look 'magical.' I'll have pics soon!

Just saw this thread. I have a slight interest in wood working of a different kind. Also I have a question about preservation of an oak stump. I have a stump that was five trees and all have been removed. I want to slab the stump so I can make a bar top. What is a good treatment for preserving it?

Paint the ends to keep the checking to a minimum, thicker the better. They make specific paint to seal the ends. Slab it and sticker it. Keep it out of the weather, under roof if possible. Rule of thumbs is a year of drying time per inch of thickness.

I would also strap it all together to minimize warping, and patience is important, but keep in mind if it’s not kiln dried it will always move, if ya dry it long enough ya may never see it. Good luck!!
