Working on some "lattice" panels to add to my privacy screen / arbour

The basic concept is that there will be horizontal only "lattice" in a frame that is the same size as the frames that house the crossreed glass I posted earlier

    The frames are made of 2" x 1 3/4" cedar rails , the horizontal laths are 9/16" x 1 1/2"

    Laths are 4" on centre

I have already cut the frames and cut the domino joints for the mitres of the frames

The laths will be attached to the side rails with 8mm Sipo dominoes

Today I cut all the joinery in the laths

As I currently only have the larger Festool domino machine , I needed to cut an approx 8mm spacer to raise the domino machine in order to cut the dominoes in the centre of the 9/16" rails

    Test fit 8mm x 30mm Sipo domino

All laths done , Dominopalooza lol

Test cutting a side rail dummy to make sure my layout and offsets all work before I cut all the mortises in the side rails

    Test fit dominoes

Test fit laths onto dominoes to confirm layout

Next weekend I hope to get these all finished up

Already planning to pick up the smaller Domino joiner as well for this type of work in the future

Yes. Although if your lumber store has plumbing/electrical stuff, it's probably going to be consider "necessary" and stay open. At least, Homedepots are still open in California... along with auto parts stores....

They only sell wood and plywood at this one. I should be able to keep working as long as home depot stays open though.

Check out the difference in these pieces of cherry. I like a little variation but, dayum! One end of the color spectrum in one piece, then the complete opposite end in the other. Almost wouldn't believe they're the same wood (even though they definitely are). Lumber warehouse is no-entry right now. Gotta call, pay online and come pick up. They pull your stuff, so you buy it sight unseen. Also got knots in a couple other bigger pieces of walnut I'll have to work around...Stupid virus. :pout:

Almost looks like sap wood. It should darken up over time.

I've gotten it like that before, but it was the whole batch. I'm not real mad about it, as it may look nice mixed together. I feel more math than I anticipated coming though. Who knows, maybe I'll prefer the look. Glass half full!

My friend gave me some of his paintings a couple years ago. Made some frames with spare barn wood.

I wouldn't either!.....but I wanted the wood, and that's the only way to get it right now.

Nice work!! I do hardwood floors so I use a lot of oil based and water based poly, but never for exterior.
Have you ever tried a marine varnish for your exterior projects ?

We haven’t, if this doesn’t hold up I’ll look into it. I’m hoping multiple coats will help with longevity, though we’ve committed to a sand and re-coat every so often to keep it up if need be.

Bought it used. Sharpened the blades, cleaned and waxed the cast iron, squared it up and never looked back. It's solid and smooth.
