I used my Porter Cable Restorer on these. It’s a great tool for getting a distressed look on wood.

Lol ya. Exactly. It’s confusing one way or another. I only mentioned because you put the joists in quotes, don’t mean to sound smartass-y:D
But regardless it looks awesome! I love simple angled cover shelters like that. Nice job that gluelam* beam will hold a lot of weight. With that short of span:militarypress:
what is that, a rotisserie chicken!? Jk. :rofl:That’s a much more intricately shaped state to make than Colorado....

I’m in the market for a jointer, any opinions?

I’d love to get this one, but the price. The six inch version is in my price range, but I worry I’d regret not having an eight inch. I’ve been mostly looking at Jet and Powermatic. Thoughts on the cutter head?

I need money left over to buy this, and to re-wire the garage.

Go with 8". Knife model is cheaper then helix and the cut is very good if you keep the blades sharp. Check out Grizzly as well.

Do you have a planer? How wide of an edge are you planning on jointing? If you already have a planer just get the 6” Powermatic, it’s like $1300 or something.
Remember, jointers aren’t really made for doing the faces of wood. That doesn’t mean you can’t do faces of wood, but a planer is much better because they utilize the pressure rollers to keep the area that is being cut flat.
    That’s my .02

If you don’t have a planer, I’d buy the 6” Powermatic jointer and the $600 dewalt planer (that’s what we did at the timber shop). Your still gonna be less than the 8” jointer and you’ll have much more versatility having both tools instead of spending $1000 more for 2 extra inches of jointer blade that you’ll likely never need. .04 cents now

I have a Dewalt 13” planer for dimensioning thickness. I’m mostly building frame and panel cabinet doors, a 6 inch jointer would work for that. I’m leaning towards an 8” so I wouldn’t be limited on flattening wider boards, like for entry doors and furniture.

I had been using my friends cabinet shop, but Covid ruined that.

Agree with @TheCochese. Once I got an 8" I never touched my 6".

What do you have? I’m now leaning towards the Powermatic helical head 8”. The grizzly is much cheaper, but comes with quality issues if I’m to believe the internet. I think it comes down to where it’s made, China, or Taiwan. Taiwan having better quality control and being more expensive.

My friend’s shop has a helical head grizzly 12”, definitely out of my price range. It was originally $2,700, but has been discontinued, the new version in $4,000.

reminds me of how the Japanese construct houses by joinery joints only.

Wish I had an 8” jointer too.

end up with S1S with a ladder and router

on to the planer next. Really need to figure out how to do all this long board stuff without roller stands.

Just a bit outside my budget. You’re like my friend when I asked him about table saws, get the Felder.

    His sliding table saw, $13,000.

2nd on the grizzly 8”...that’s what my dad has had for well over a decade and I don’t recall there being any problems. It’s a knife style not helical though. We’ve had more problems with the teeth on the powermatic helical planer chipping and breaking than the joiner.
