Yeah, I've only turned a couple so far and I've been meaning to do more. Maybe now is the time.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
    I like your thinking.

Conundrum.. I like metal work and woodwork. Can the smaller less expensive woodwork lathes handle metal too? Can't think off a time a metal project required a lathe piece but it would be cool to have the option maybe.

The wood lathes I've seen aren't metal capable, I have seen some wood work done in a metal lathe though

So I have a bit of a dilemma with this desk. I cannot for the life of me figure out what kind of stain/finish this guy used when he made it. Before anyone asks, yes I reached out to him but he wouldn’t divulge his “trade secrets”, and he was quite an asshole about it. At first I thought it was just a penetrating oil. So I tried antique oil and tung oil on a section that I sanded down to bare wood and it doesn’t match. Side by side it seems that the original finish has a slight tint to it and a tiny bit of pigment. I know for a fact there was no poly on it because there were horrible dark water rings all over the top. I also tried alcohol and mineral spirits with steel wool and no luck removing anything.

My plan is to get everything down as close to bare wood as I can, but there are spots where it seems like the stain penetrated all the way through the slab. So...I’m trying to get a relatively close match to whatever he used and I’m trying to avoid using a gel stain or other pigmented stain. My plan for finishing was antique oil, shellac, water based poly but now that might change.

Also when I’m sanding with the orbital sander or sanding blocks it gums up really quickly and leaves this little resin deposits on the paper. I’ve never experienced this before so I’m pretty stumped, and my dad can’t figure out what’s on this wood either.

Areas around the tenons where the stain seems to have penetrated much deeper.

Here’s a drawer front I scraped down. You can see the blotchiness where I got down to bare wood and where i wasn’t able to get down to bare wood.

here’s the top which I more or less got all the way down to bare wood

here’s the deposits that clog the sandpaper and then makes it pretty much ineffective (P120 grit)

    None....yet.
Got any 60 grit? I almost want to say it looks waxy from the pics. I'd go coarser and get after it personally.

Yeah I went down to 80 grit with the orbital sander. I got out the big orbital sander too not the cordless one, that's how I got the top so clean but it took forever and made a real mess. It still got really clogged up too

My first attempt at simple table for small house I am renovating. Me and my dad Cut, dried, milled, hand plained. From a 250-300 yr old red oak that had storm damage. Tree was 73" in diameter at about chest high. Medullary rays look great. Rust stains I thought would add character, not so sure now. That rust really got dark with clear polly. Or the oak really got brighter around it.

Are those wood floors or vinyl plank? I'm in the market for flooring and have been looking at the nicer vinyl plank stuff
