I'm just getting into turning myself. I got the lathe for the GF from Rockler (Excelsior) for Christmas. It came with a Pen Turning set. Anxious to try it...I mean ...for her to try it out...

Haha well you have to test it out to make sure she doesn't get hurt and everything is working properly ;) That's a pretty good looking lathe. Almost looks like my Jet lathe. Did you buy any tools yet?

I bought a nice carbide replaceable tipped bit but the stupid thing has some weird sized allen key and I cant get the allen screw out to rotate the bit. So I got ticked and ordered a nice carbide bit tool with a couple different blades and its in a kit so it has the right allen key. But it is best to have sharp tools, quality tools are also better.

The black Friday special came with the pen tool set. Two carbide tipped and one hs tool. $250 for the lathe and the tool set. The tool set was a $99 value. I couldn't resist. Plus you can get a bed extension for the lathe.

So looking into these pen kits, what all do you need? I ordered a few slimline kits, now I need the mandrel? Bushings? WTF? Damn impulse buying...

depends what came with your lathe...It should say something about a 7mm mandrel. If not you might have to purchase separately for your particular lathe. also need a pen press to "Press" the pieces together, Epoxy and super glue, sandpaper from 150-10000 grit, finishing wax or something similar depending on what you are using, trim bits, good turning tools and the particular pen kit bushings. The 7mm bushings usually come with the mandrel and sometimes the lathe.

Well, I tried to warn ya.

All you really need is a mandrel, a means to hold it in your lathe head, a set of bushings and a sharp brad point drill sized for the given project.

It's been nearly 20 years but as I remember, by row, left to right, top to bottom.

No.2 Morse taper mandrel adapter, fixed size, set screw type. Cutter to square off, deburr and trim a blank (with brass tube glued inside) to an exact length (7mm OD tube I think). I just trimmed blanks to length on a table saw with a miter gauge.

No.1 Morse taper adapter with collet type chuck, basic mandrel installed. The threaded end is drilled for a live or dead center.

    Basic mandrel.

    Yet another basic mandrel.

Two sets of bushings for different projects. Some sort of "tool" that helps press brass tubes on to the pen/pencil mechanisms (not needed as I remember).

Two more sets of bushings. "Bushings" are slid on the mandrel at each end of the wood blank and the whole stack is squeezed together and held firm with the mandrel nut. They serve as cutting depth guides and are the same diameter as the pen tips, caps etc.

Thanks fellas. I'll wait till I...er....she opens it. I read through the description of the lathe so I have abasic idea of what it needs. I've got some things saved already so it will be a click away. Nice her bday is two weeks after Christmas
