Building a hard maple desk top for a standing desk frame right now. Had a lot of glue squeeze out, feels like I am going to be sanding this thing for the rest of my life.

That is a good idea! I have been wanting to get one of those. I was going to try a hand plane but I am not comforatable enough with them yet. Last time I used it on my work bench I had a lot of tear out and I dont want to ruin this maple.

These scrapers come in basicly 2 different styles, one is just a standard flat blade that can be maintained like a card scraper. That is what's in my pic above. They also made it in a u shaped or c shaped double sided blade, that ones not as easy to sharpen and the blades can be tricky to find. I have found them on ebay new at times. I would recommend the flat blade style, you can always make a new blade from an old hand saw if you ever wear yours out. I have both styles, but I'm kind of a collector.

    So the joke goes-

Wife walks in and sees all the hand planes, and says "don't you have enough planes?" To which the husband replies "Why you know someone who is selling some?"

    That's a great collection.

I have a #7c and #8 stanley/bailey that I believe are type 11, puts them at about 100 years old. And they rock!

I only have one vintage plane, I'd guess it's about that vintage, it's a #7, the rest are Lie-Nielsen. I'm just a hobbyist, a pro wouldn't need something like that where it comes pre-tuned.

I dont have any lie-neilsens yet, although if I was to pick up a regular plane (not a specialty usage thing) I would go that route. I have a 4&1/2 veritas, and the depth adjustment being up top is just dumb. I'm a large guy, pretty large hands (glove shopping is a problem) so I may pick up a 5&1/2 at some point to use as my main. That would definitely be an LN. (Just peeked the site and theyre out of stock.) And pricey! Saving me from myself I suppose. While I am attempting my shot at being pro- there's something to be said about where you spend your time. Sure I've restored older planes but having something work out of the box so you can get to work is a good option.

I do have their shooting board plane and it's absolutely worth the money. Amazing quality on that one. I'm overdue for a workbench cleanup, I will line them up and punch up a pic later.

Here's my small collection. I bought the Stanley Jack plane decades ago but never used it much. It never cut well for me so I only used it occasionally, until I learned how to sharpen and adjust it :). Then while making an iceboat mast a friend stopped by and let me use his block plane. I liked that so much I bought my first Lie-Nielsen. I never expected to buy more than one due to the expense, but that thing is so perfect and cuts so nice....

    Sigh.

The 4-1/2 smoothing plane is amazing to use. It totally blew me away. Still does in fact.

My block plane is an older stanley 60&1/2 and man that thing touches every project. What a champ!

I had no idea how useful one of those really is! My second plane was the 60-1/2 rabbeting block plane, it help with cutting tenons. I should have just gone straight for the shoulder plane, but that was too expensive... o_O

Funny what started here with just one pic! Lol
Some of my planes look like duplicates, but actually they are smooth sole and corrugated sole. Some of my collection are users, others just for the fun of collecting and holding something in my hands that's older than me, lol. My hand plane collection is in a closet in my shop, I guess I could say I came out of the closet now, lol.

Now pics of my shop will have to wait a bit until I'm done with the outfeed table project. I sold my old table saw, got a new saw. Everything that was on the old outfeed tables is now on the floor and my shop is wrecked while I'm building the new tables. Once I'm done all my jigs and fixtures will go back under the tables on the shelf and then I can get some pics of my shop how it normally is.
