That is beautiful. Too bad you had to stain that beautiful wood, but it's what the customer wanted and pays for, I get that. My sister lives in Manhattan.

I got an upgrade for my 15 or 20 year old dewalt miter saw today. Makita ls1219l slider.

The fit and finish on this thing is amazing.
    20211207_150257.jpg
I haven't had the chance to set it up yet. But it's in the shop. I'll probably have to re work the miter saw fences to make this fit where the dewalt is now.

I've had it a looong time. The fence has never been good on it since day one, it's bowed. Good enough for carpentry but not for fine wood working, it's going in the garage .

I had a jet saw, fence was bowed out. I had to mount a piece of wood to the outside of it to get it to about 99% square...still wasnt 100% true. Sucked a bit for cutting boards

the great thing about such a big piece of wood is that there was plenty on the drop end to show off it's natural beauty in another build. I actually cut off a bit from each end of the slab to get the right shape for the dining table, and had the pleasure of doing a few focal point tables for a high end restaurant locally. used the larger drop end for a cocktail table. the sap wood really shimmers. satin finish with a 2500 wet sand and very light buff.

Finished the build of our spiral staircase step stool, just a bit of sanding then the finish. Treads are walnut, other pieces are poplar. I want to gel stain (after conditioning) the poplar darker (it's almost white as-is), but the other half "wants to see the grain" and "let the wood be itself". Too much contrast for me. So I'm going to do some tests with various stains/Tung oil/etc to find a compromise.

Anyway, we had a friend who helped us and let us use his shop for most of the work. My first time using a lathe (I turned all the support posts) and it was fun. I want to do something for him to show my appreciation, so I'm going to make a walnut box. He mentioned needing some wood dowel pin centers, so those will go in the box. Before starting, I knew my miter saw sucks and couldn't make accurate miter joints, so I made a bevel cut sled for my table saw. Now just need to either tung oil and wax bottom, or shellac then wax the bottom.

@916carl I have made sleds like that. I dont apply any finish to them, just 2 coats of wax all over works fine for years. And it's easy to just apply another coat if needed.
    The stairs are very cool!

Thanks, I'll probably just wax it as well. I have some Minwax paste wax already. I was worried about moisture absorption with the MDF, but I've read a lot of people just use wax and it's fine. Original plan wax to make it out of plywood, but looking at HD prices for decent ply - frack that. I keep putting off building the box by finding other things to do first; like building this sled. I also want to build a jig for mitered keys for the corners of the box. Lol, I've got the jig/sled bug!

Have you ever used hidden barrel hinges? I got some and want to try them, but on some scrap first until I get the hang of it.

Nice job! And, in case it matters to you, your wife's cell phone number is being displayed on the white board on the frig. I may or may not have called to see if it works....:anonymous:

It will be interesting. These are 10mm wide while the box side is 3/4. Plenty of room, however the hinges have to be located close to the edge. Ill either have to bevel the edge so the lid doesn't bind when opening (allowing me to locate the hinge hole a little further away from the edge), or shim a small gap between the top and bottom, as is simulated in the pic. I have a drill press and some new brad point bits, but sketchy still. I'll do a lot practice of practice on pine first, but of course walnut in different. I'll probably do the holes before anything else, in case the side chips/blows out. I won't be so far into it the project that I'll loose my shit. :D

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
The edge needs beveled otherwise they won't open if I remember correctly.

Any welder/woodworker combos in here? I love to see good metal and wood together projects! Best combo in my eyes :)

Nice saw, give us an update after you've had time to run it through its paces. I'm looking to upgrade mine as well and would be interested to hear your impression of it.
