I've been meaning to add that to my list here.. bought a fancy sharpener when I bought the saw.. it's in the box.

Any photos or plans or information on the kiln you're building?

I was wondering about the 3/4 HP, but lathe work isn't my schtick, but I've wanted to learn. Think I'd grow out of it quickly if I'm into it?

3/4 is good, I started out on a 1/3 HP.

    Grow out of it? Possibly?

I know I want a different one that's beefier and with a readout but that's not so much growing out of it as it is getting what I want. I got this lathe in a bulk sale of tools and wood so I'm OK with it for now. My other lathes are just minis (tabletop) so they are limited in their capacity and capabilities.

If you decide to get it, get good or great tools. The last thing you want is to be discouraged by using crappy tools.

So true! I wasted a decade thinking it just was worthless as a woodworker until I upgraded my table saw. That opened the floodgates! Now I’m broke… lol

This buy-once, cry-once logic gets me into trouble. I was in the camp of telling folks you can build anything with near to nothing a 2nd hand beater tools…skip to a Sawstop and too many LN hand tools. I hold that such tools aren’t absolutely necessary; but, hot damn is woodworking so much more enjoyable now.

I bought a decent Stanley Jack plane a couple decades ago but never had much luck with it. Fast forward to recently when I started my binge, LN planes are freakin amazing. I can make my old Stanley work much better now, but it’ll never cut as nice as the LN planes.

I honestly don’t remember how long I left it running for.. it’s been 3 or 4 years since I used it. The idea was for it to be easy to break down and put away, yet ironically it’s still sitting on my mini ramp.

I know I didn’t leave it on for more than a couple days.

I’ve only used it (and my chainsaw mill) with red oak.

I used a lathe for the first time a few months ago and it was awesome. I think I did a decent job and got the hang of some simple things pretty quickly. Really fun. I think I got spoiled as the guy had a Jet lathe with a digital speed controller. It was nice to dial down the speed when rough gouging a blank, then dial it up to round it. If I had space...

That would be a good starter lathe to learn on. You'll make a lot of stuff with it and if you decide you really like turning you may upgrade from it some day. That's a good price for it. When I first started turning and was looking for a lathe I would have bought that one. Good thing about Grizzly stuff is you have customer support and parts availability.

    That's cool.

How did you monitor temperature and moisture content?

Super stoked to find this gem of a thread. Wanted to share a few posts.

here’s a farm style table I made for a Christmas gift for my mother last year. Made out of 140 year old cypress 2x3s and 4s that were from an old cotton gin in Mississippi. Filled the old nail holes and imperfections with clear epoxy. Picture does not do it justice.
