Any woodworkers?

I spent way to much money after a pilgrimage to Woodcraft. They had one sjobergs scandi workbench left and sold it 510. Less than half, and 10% since tomorrow is my birthday. Got Japanese hollow back chisels, and a low angle jack plane. Happy happy day.

 

First one back flat with bevel and micro bevel created. Lots of not flat on the back to remove. Lol. 9 to go.
I only have 220, 1000, 5000 in waterstone. One day I will be cool and be able to make mirror finish.

 

These are beginners chisels. This is neither flat nor square

 

You using a grinder then stones?

 

No. They are hollow ground on the back so that it is less material to remove to make the back flat. It is a feature of Japanese chisels. The iron hoop is knocked off, then the red oak hammered into a slight taper, the hoop is knocked back on, then the oak mushroomed over the iron.

Ok now the 220 scratch pattern goes to the back edge so it is flat.

Next it goes in the angle gauge to set the front bevel to 30 degrees.

 

What is your opinion of that Veritas sharpening system? I saw it on woodcraft and was curious about it.

Ok now the bevel is set and has a consistent 220 scratch pattern. On to 1000 and to start the micro bevel.

 

This to 1000 grit with the micro bevel started.

The wierd swirl is high carbon steel layered in to ductile iron as I understand it.

 

That is to 5000 grit. Cuts nice.

 

Sorry man. I am very happy with it. Saves times and is much easier than by hand set angle.

First time working with fiberglass, learned A LOT. I keep saying if I ever build a second one if these it’s going to be so much easier. Prep went fine, and the fiberglass matting was relatively easy and more formable to the odd canoe shape than I thought it would be. Mixing the epoxy and wetting out the fiberglass wasn’t brain surgery, really just had to watch my timing and try and alternate putting it in and squeegeeing the excess off before it cured to hard.

my mistake came in not squeegeeing enough off for this first coat. I thought I should leave more on than I needed to, so now I have some areas that are fully encased, and some that the fiberglass weave is showing through (ideally with the first coat, I should have pulled enough off so the fiberglass weave was uniformly visible but fully wetted through). This also led to more fine bubbles showing than I expected after a couple hours.

It should still come out fine in the end, some extra sanding time, and being careful with the next coat or two should still get me where I want to be.

 

Will you be installing an aluminum keel for more protection?

 

no, at least not at first. Everywhere I will use it is relatively gentle paddling, and no rocks, so I’m not worried about it getting to beat up. If I do scrape the hell out of it and it needs to be repaired I’ll probably add something then.
