    Doweling is so last millenium.
But that is an excellent jig for it.

I don't like the biscuit jointer. It keeps moving on me no matter how much I tighten it. I'll have to look at it to see if the fence can be adjusted. That's why I went to the dowels.

Biscuits only align in one plane anyway. Dowels are best in some applications. The Festool Domino is a fantastic tool for a doweling application.

That thing is nice but I can't drop that kind of coin on one. They do have a "manual" jig version out.

I got a el-cheapo Tool Shop biscuit joiner. Always had good results. I think as long as the work piece is clamped tight and everything on the joiner is good and tight results are usually favorable. Square marks help to:rolleyes:(first lesson I learned the hard way)

This one is a Freud. The thickness fence (one that goes up and down) slowly walks up. You have to check every cut.

That would be a huge problem! I take it you can no longer return it. Have you contacted Freud? They are usually a reliable brand. They may repair or replace to make it work right:notsure:

It's actually my BIL's. He doesn't use it so I "borrowed" it (with permission). I can look into it though.

Almost grabbed a used-for-one-project Ridgid thickness planer for 50% off new price, but didn't really care if I had it. Listed for $200 locally, I offered him $150, he countered with $175, I said $160..

Sold elsewhere, but I wasn't in the market for one so I'm okay with it. I'd only have been floored to get it for such a massive discount. Good deals to be had out there.

I think you have a greater base in your area. Not much "clean" equipment comes up here. And when it does it is horribly over priced. I can check craigslist on a weekly basis and still not miss anything.

The one thing the gets me (and I see it on ebay too) is the blatant over use (and miss use for that matter) of the word "vintage". It's old and has patina so it must be vintage. What vintage? 1980 isn't really a good vintage. Oh, and that "patina"...that's rust.

90% of our stuff is tweakers selling old crap that's been sitting outside for 10 years.

The planer was being sold by a guy in an old folks community about 25 minutes from me, and the biscuit joiner deal I got was found 2 1/2 hours south of me.

Some good stuff and a lot of beat up garbage, I assume like damn near everywhere. One blessing I do benefit from is a large population in my area, but not sure how much.

2 great deal finds in 6 months is probably as good as anybody sees, and about what I expect.

    I check almost every day.

My problem is justification. If I do find a good deal it's usually 2-3 hours away and by the time I factor in gas and time, it's cheaper to buy new.

I'm not a haggler either. If I don't like the price I just walk. Maybe that's my issue.

I paid full price for the joiner ($100) because it was significantly better than anything else in that price range that was new.

The planer was the same deal, both like new with barely any use and mature owners who didn't let them turn into garbage. $175 was a steal, IMO. I belueve they're $369 or so new, plus tax - so a substantial savings. Figured if he would take $160 then I'd have a killer deal that I'd likely never see again and then can justify buying it without immediate need. If he didn't, then I still have $160 in my pocket. Admittedly a bit amazed I didn't go for it, as I'm a bit impulsive, but not having any kind of mental or emotional investment in the deal was a nice change. Still a little bummed it's not in my garage, but not disappointed. :D

I paid $70 for a 6 inch Delta joiner from the State via an online auction. They even loaded it with a bobcat for me. It only had two missing blade holders. The holders cost me less than the shipping did of course. Other than that, it just needed the "patina" cleaned off the surface. Fired right up.

    Fucking vintage.

The only word possibly more abused on craigslist is "beautiful." Especially WRT couches.

On a related note to Craigslist finds, I got the Porter Cable 577 biscuit joiner in hand this past Sunday, and I am jazzed. Not only is it in like new condition, but as I had hoped with it being an older manufactured version than the current model, it includes the 2" blade - which is new, unused! :woot:

I paid $100 for it, with a ton of biscuits, and the 2" blade alone is $50-60 or so brand new. Total score!

Weather was nice so I decided to do a little more work on the slab. I'm an absolute noob and this is my first project. I really don't care much for this slab (wood type and defect issues) but I'm determined to finish it. Already looking for another slab project. Anyhow, thought I'd share some progress.

Dang woodworms. Decided to use a dental pick to carefully scrape what I could out.

Now it's time for a little elbow grease with a finer grit. Still needs more work before I even think about using tung oil.
