I haven't purchased anything further quite yet and I'll be waiting to do anything further till it warms up a bit - so I'm open to this idea. What would you say the advantage is by going this route rather than epoxy? Is Tung oil usually used with a waxed/dewaxed shellac for a seal before applying any sort of urethane?

Why urethane varnish and not a glossy epoxy? Personal preference?

Epoxy can look a little like plastic to me. The epoxy coating is usually very thick, sometimes equivalent to 60 coats of polyurethane. You will probably lose all of the grain texture with the epoxy.

Sanding sealer dries quickly, builds evenly and sands easily. You wouldn't need but one coat of varnish over the sanding sealer. Varnish can also be hand polished with steel wool or Scotch Brite pads. I just think the end result will be more natural with the sealer/ varnish combo.

Also I would let the piece acclimate to it's new home kind of like how you do hardwood flooring before finishing it. Just remember to do both sides of the piece with equal coats of whatever you decide to use.

...did you use pure tung oil, or a product merely marketed as "tung oil finish" or similar... there are a lot of products out there that are misleading because they give the impressions it's just "tung oil", ..when actually they're oil/varnish blends... i think the pure oils generally take a long time to cure, as Street Taco said...

unless you're going to topcoat with another oil-based product (an oil-based poly, varnish, etc), ...you'd probably best give it enough time to cure... if it's going to be used outdoors, you'll probably want a finish that weathers well against moisture and sunlight (UV light)... clear finishes don't really provide any UV protection, but if you use one w/ UV inhibitors in it helps (generally $$$ though)...

check out matt cremona's outdoor farmhouse table project, ...he lists the finishes he used:

Finished construction of the wine fridge hutch. Stained with Varathane (Formerly Rustoleum) Carrington. I think I'm going to shellac it.

Nice! Will there be enough air space around the fridge. We have alcove fridges at work that worked alright when they were new. After a few years the alcoves suddenly are to small and those fridges can't cool themselves without more venting.

Yes, I made sure I took that into consideration. I also added the holes in the back along with a ridge so it could not be pushed flat against a wall.

Made this cutting board ~5 years ago with my dad and it's still holding up fantastic. End grain hard maple with purple heart.

Yep, my buddy ended up buying a bigger shop light. That was before I put the back up to hang all his tools. It didn't come out all that bad. I'm a merchant mariner, if ever I stopped sailing and wanted to pick up another trade working with wood would be it.
