Done. Any tips on removing wood glue before it dries? Or how to make it take stain? I think I’ve heard using a wet rag, but some of those joints are too close to get a rag in.

 

Depends how fast its setting but wait maybe 45 min to 1hr and peel it off with a wood chisel. If you let it dry overnight it will come off witha wood chisel but it can rip out material.

For that you might have to wrap a block of wood with a damp rag to get in the corners.

 

First part of my answer, not sniping but ..., wipe it if when wet. Something I must remind myself of whenever I glue a joint that will need stain or polyurethane. And I look psychotic with paper towels in hand starting at the piece dabbing here and there.

If you were not able to succeed with number 1, you can try applying a stain sealer so that all surfaces (wood, glue) have the same absorbancy.

But this obviously requires practice first on pieces that can look bad.

I can’t say I really like cutting dovetails, but I sure do like the end result.

 

To be honest, I bought some better sharpening stones and chopping out the waste this time was far easier, I didn’t need the mallet at all. That was pretty cool.

 

Ain’t much more satisfying than a razor sharp chisel

One could make the argument that someone working with rusty chisels are living in a self-inflicted “special circle of hell”

 

The post showing the dovetails got me thinking that I need to sharpen my chisels....but I don't know how. What do I need? I'm not sure what stones to get. I know I need a jig to hold the chisel, but am confused about the stones. Can you guys help me?

 

How deep down the rabbit hole do you want to go?

 

You can easily spend a kings ransom on stones, and there are pros and cons to each kind. But FWIW I've had good luck with this set:

It's cheap and it gets the job done. No maintenance or flattening. FYI the box they come in is garbage, you'll want to make a little jig to hold them. I've since added a XX-Fine 3 micron DMT "stone" and a leather strop with 1 micron compound.

I also use the veritas sharpening jig, which is a bit of an extravagance but I like it. Probably not necessary. Some people just sharpen by feel with no guide.

Exactly why I mentioned the rabbit hole.
I'm pretty far down that hole now, but damn, the sharpness is amazing. I wish I'd picked up my recent stones long ago. The veritas jig is awesome and well worth the money. The easy ability to do the microbevel makes it worthwhile. I have a couple of the cheaper guides and while they work, they are much more finicky to get a good result.
My 10,000 grit stone gives a perfect mirror finish which is amazing.
